Braves have traded Ryan Scrimps for C Carlos Perez

MLBTR recently had this on Perez who had been DFA'd: "The move will potentially cost the team the 27-year-old Perez, who is out of options. He had been a significant contributor in 2015 and 2016, but a slide at the plate in the latter of those two yeas let him on the outside looking in last season. Perez ended up appearing in just 11 games in the 2017 season, though he did impress (.352/.423/.502 with 32 walks against 38 strikeouts) in his 300 Triple-A plate appearances. While the bat still seems rather intriguing, Perez’s defensive work has been the subject of some critique from the Angels organization."

Hopefully this means we only called up a pitcher for tonight and add Perez to the bench for the Washington series. I am assuming Stewart will start Monday unless Suzuki has a quick recovery.

Perez is out of options so he will need to clear waivers to go down later. MLBTR again: "Over 595 PAs with the Angels, Perez batted .224/.267/.332 (64 wRC+). On the defensive side, Perez threw out an impressive 38 percent of would-be base stealers (far above the 30 percent league average) during his Angels tenure, though he did draw minus pitch-framing marks from 2015-16. With no options remaining, Perez will have to go through waivers if the Braves attempt to demote him to the minors."

AA has ties to Perez: Carlos Perez signed with the Blue Jays when AA was their Assistant GM. AA later traded him to the Astros in a trade that sent J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon, and the David Carpenter to the Jays.

Or they got freaked out by the available options if we lose two catchers and had a highly expendable player to trade for a catcher.

The Angels must not of thought much of him is they were willing to trade him for Schimpf.

When Perez fails, Rupp is still available.

They probably just wanted an extra catcher for now with Suzuki still recovering and Flowers out. But once both are back we may see both Stewart and Perez DFA'd. Perez had been DFA'd by the LAA not long before the trade.

Hopefully Stewart will accept an assignment to AAA. I like having him around in case of injury. He's got a great defensive reputation and I could see why from Saturday's game.

I suspect he will as there was talk of sending him down before the injury.

Well yeah, we weren't exactly going to get someone good for a player we picked up off the scrap heap who then proceeded to have one of the worst springs I can remember.
