Braves interested in Samardzija or Hammel?

I wonder what would happen if the Braves put Santana/Floyd on the market.

I'd love to have Smardjiza. He is an upgrade on everyone in the rotation aside from Julio/Minor. Problem is the cost would be high.
 
Samardzija started off real hot last year too then completely fell off the cliff. His high K numbers make him a tad overrated imo. Is he good? Ya. Would he be an upgrade? Ya. Is one year of him worth what we'd have to give up? No. Is he better than Minor? No. He simply has never had a complete season as good as Minor's last year. Not to mention Minor is cheaper, under control longer, and already on our team so wouldn't cost valuable young assets.

We should trade for a good lefty BP arm and try to improve the bench. I'd like a better 4th OFer that can play CF. If BJ continues to play this bad at the very least he needs to be platooned kinda like last year down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs.
 
You guys are absolutely crazy for wanting to trade Minor for Samardzija. Samardzija is overrated because of his high K numbers, and is a good pitcher, but is not much of an upgrade at all over Minor if at all. Plus taking into account contract status and control and age and I'll take my chances with Minor. Samardzija is one of those guys that us fans and even scouts and management drool over because of their stuff and potential, yet they rarely go above and beyond who they are and live up to that untapped potential. Samardzija is wildly inconsistant, you see flashes of brillance for prolonged periods of time followed by prolonged periods of medocrity. Don't get me wrong I like Samardzija, but he's not worth the cost, and I absolutely love Minor and think his best is yet to come. It might be a little of homer in me, and Minor has struggled a little at times this season, but I've loved the Minor pick when it was made and still stand by him. I felt that the guys ceiling is Cliff Lee and I think his best is yet to come.

I hope we go into the next half decade with Tehran, Minor, and Wood as mainstays at the top of the rotation and the rest of it can be filled with however the chips fall.

I agree with most, but I think Schafer is a pretty good fourth OF. If he made a little more contact, which he did for half a year last year, he'd be perfect. I think he needs to play more to get his timing and some consistency. BJ hits lefthanders well. Give Jordan a start a week against righties. It's not like you're taking at bats away from Mike Trout. Lastly, I'd like to see Jordan bunt once a game when he's in. He's very good at it. Defensively, he's everything you need.

I don't have that big of a problem with Schafer as a backup as long as their are other PH options that are actually viable and good hitters, like last year....you had a Gattis/McCann and Reed Johnson for 2 ABs late in the game. This year we don't have that.

But where I'm at right now, I think I'd actually much sooner see Schafer in CF everyday than the travesty known as BJ. At least Schafer can cover some ground and catch a routine flyball, and brings an edge attitude wise.

Those guys don't help the Cubs. They help a borderline contender who need a rotation upgrade.

Didn't Bowman say in the offseason that the Cubs were asking for Heyward or Upton (the good one) for Samardzija?

There is, I suppose, an argument for taking an area where you're good and making it an area where you're great. That can usually be achieved with one move, while improving a crummy offense in a significant way would require several. Improve the rotation to the point where it's outstanding and hope the position players step it up.

I don't know that I buy that in our specific circumstances. I'd prefer to hold off on the big deals, maybe make a lower level swap or two for a bench player and middle reliever, and let our minor league system slowly replenish itself. Let the 2014 season unfold as it will.
 
Without knowing the price I like the idea of trading for Samardzjia. I wouldn't trade Peraza in any deal but the Cubs need pitching depth. I would look to tradr Harang and Floyd and flip those prospects along with some of ours for Samardzjia. I would also look to get Wesley Wright who is a decent lefty reliever and Luis Valbuena who can play 2b/3b and is lefty so he could platoon with Johnson and be a defensive replacement. Harang and Floyd i think will have value because of their short term commitment. We won't hit the jackpot but someone will give up a qualitu arm to plug a hole in the middleb of their rotation. The yankees and rangers come to mind.

I am looking at a playoff rotation starting with Teheran and Samardzjia in games 1-2 and I like ut a lot. Samardzjia has said he wants to win and no one does it mor consistently year to year as the Braves. Maybe he would sign a long term dealm
 
I would assume the Cubs won't ask for Justin or Heyward anymore. At some point they have to make realistic demands. Next year we only have Teheran/Wood/Minor as locks for the rotation. I think we need to go for broke while we still have Justin and Heyward. Imagine the attendance boost if we go into the new stadium coming off a deep playoff run.
 
I think Samardzjia can be more dominant than Minor which matters in the playoffs. I know Minor did well in his playoff start but the playoff rotation still bothers me. We have a great regular season rotation but we have seen that fail time and again in the first round. Trading Minor for Samatdzjia would just be asinine because it is a lateral move and we get 1 less year of Samardzjia than Minor. Unless its part of a bigget deal bringing back Bryant or Baez which I would love.

Anyone thinking Jeff is anything more than a good pitcher is a complete moron. In his only 2 seasons as a starter he has ERA's of 3.81 and 4.34 with FIPS of 3.55 and 3.77 in those years. There is nothing close to ace like in those numbers. This year he has a 2.77 era and a 2.95 FIP which is obviously very good. However his low HR/FB rate is not something I see continuing. Meaning I suspect he will start to give up more homers and his numbers will balloon accordingly. Would he help our rotation? Yeah he would. But trading him for Minor plus others is a very bad move.
 
If the braves could flip santana/floyd with either Jeff S. Or a top of the rotation guy they should do it.

The current rotation is not enough for the playoffs.

Yet you are the only that doesnt know anything about advanced stats and sabermetrics. . How come a bunch of people arent agreeing with you since you seem to be so knowledgeable?
