Braves limited Heyward's power potential

How the hell are Freeman and Simmons "not as advertised"?

How the hell are they as advertised? Freeman is fine but he hasn't done it long enough yet. Simmons at this point is not a complete player. His offense needs improvement you all know that as well as I do. Gattis at this point should not be on the field defensively. Yunel Escobar was the biggest clubhouse cancer we ever had. Again it comes back to the name on the front not the ones on the back of the jersey.

Most of the first half of last season. Contrary to our resident stat guru, it was more than a month.

Heyward's OPS by month in 2014:

April/March .609

May .777

June .774

July .754

August .829

Sept/Oct .635

So a bad first and last month sandwiched around 4 decent/good months.

If BJ and Uggla were hitting like that, Wren would still have a job, and the Braves wouldn't be "rebuilding" right now.

Freeman was touted as a high average guy with 20-25 homerun power. He's actually exceeded expectations since many evaluators thought his ceiling was nothing more than an above average first baseman. Simmons was touted as an all-world defender at SS, and that's exactly what he's been.

It sounds like you just expect everyone to be perfect players, and very few players are. No one actually advertised them as such, though. And I don't even know what you're getting at with your last sentence. No one has said otherwise.

YEAH BUT why isn't every player a top-10 player?
Simmons with a .760 OPS bat is an absolute stud. He's already really good.

I think you need to read up on the phrase "as advertised."

Simmons was projected to be an all-world glove who had major questions on whether he would hit at the major league level. -Check

Freeman was projected to be an above average 1B that would hit for a high average with modest power. - Check.

Gattis had a bat that projected well, but had ton of defensive questions on whether he could stick at catcher - Check.

Yunel being a cancer has little to do with playing up to his hype, unless he was hyped as being an amazing team leader, which is doubtful.

May be YOUR expectations were for something else, but in reality, the Braves have had plenty of players who are exactly "as advertised."

Did someone advertise Simmons as a good hitter?

Yeah I'm pretty sure Simmons was never advertised as a great hitter, just outstanding defender.

I think the fan in us all hopes Simmons can be a decent hitter who hits maybe .300 w/10hr or .280 15-20hr.

Biggest concern with Simmons was his OBP and walk rate. You remember he didn't strikeout for like 60 or so at-bats to start the season. Impressive but he only had a handful of walks in that same stretch. Would rather he strike out a few times and walk more than hit all the mile high popups and ground balls.
