Braves/Nats trade first basemen

Not sure I get this one. Would imagine it closes the door for sure on Swisher though.

This is only a minor move as even Moore was already outrighted to the minors. He was no longer in the Nats plans and Braves simply like him better than Nate Freiman. So I don't think he'll effect Swisher at all. But Swisher seems to be gone one way or another regardless. I doubt they get a team to take him and any of his contract. He'll simply be released soon IMO.

Braves are assuming all of Moore's $900k salary in this deal (he was an arb eligible player this Winter). I like the strategy of investing in quality depth in AAA, though I can't say I'm in love with what Moore brings to the table.

I like the deal. Moore has some versatility that Freiman lacks. I don't know if this will have any effect on the big league roster.

Freiman and Moore both hit from the right side. I think there is still a question of who will be our primary left handed bat on the bench. Bourn is a weak hitter. Bonifacio is a weak hitter who hits better from the right side.

It is unclear how the situation at third and second will unfold, but I imagine there will be plenty of games where both Kelly Johnson and Jace Peterson will be in the lineup against righties. So who is out lefty late game pinch hitter in those situations?

But isn't Moore out of options?

What's Keith Lockhart doing these days?

Probably ends up not doing much but I like the move. Moore is a decent RH bat off the bench with power

He might have cleared waivers and accepted a minor league assignment from the gnats. In which case, this is simply a trade of minor league players, with neither being on a 40 man roster.

Yeah, he was put on outright waivers (not release waivers) and cleared. If the Nationals had put him on release waivers, they would have been able to just pay him 45 days termination pay. So the Nats decided they preferred to pay him the full $900k to serve as AAA depth. Then they must've had a change of heart (maybe they really like Nate Frieman). Moore is of options, but not on the 40-man.
