Braves offense and 2017

There is some nuance behind adding a player like Kemp to a lineup completely devoid of power that adds more value than strictly adding up WAR values. Because of that, Kemp has certainly improved this team.

However, that doesn't mean he was a good acquisition. Literally any power hitter for LF would have improved this team, and a good one would have improved this team even more than Kemp has.

Bottom line is the FO likely settled on acquiring Kemp cheaply when the young pitching failed to develop, thus scuttling all realistic plans of contending next year. If the young pitching had excelled this year, I truly think the FO would have been looking to acquire a hitter at the Cespedes or McCutchen level for LF. Instead, they got Kemp cheaply and immediately started the spin campaign to sell him to the fan base.

some consideration needs to be given to acquisition costs of Kemp and the alternatives you mention

A guy earns a shot when he does what Adonis is doing at the age of 23, not 31.

And you conveniently left out Freese's average defense. Folks see Adonis make a few routine plays look hard and suddenly think he is now an MLB quality defender.

Isn't David Freese two years older than Garcia? No need to answer, he is.

So you're telling everyone that Freese and his "average defense" (your words) is "worth" $8 million more than an almost mirror image of himself two years ago???

Interesting. Please apply for a job with the Cubs - they believe Heyward's "worth" $184 million too.

Looking at the team for next year. If we can find a decent hitting catcher. We have the luxury of not having any poor hitters. If we pull that off we'd have an acceptable offense. Problem is that to do that we'd have to have Kemp and Markakis in thte OF which will lead to **** OF defense. Problem with that system is that you're hoping to be kind of like the White Sox this year but with a superstar like Freeman.

Just so I'm clear about the latest idiotic clv logic, you don't think Freese is an upgrade over Garcia? And you think Adonis is an acceptable option at 3b for a team trying to contend?

Further, you try to insult someone by comparing them to the Cubs FO? The same FO that has constructed the best MLB roster in the game right now?

Oh, PS- Freese is currently playing for about $5m per year, not $8m. Learn some facts about the players you are blabbering about before posting you twit.

If we weren't paying like 30M for Kemp and Markakis I'd say he's worth it. As it is now, I'd stick with giving Ruiz a shot since 2017 won't be a winning season.

But you're correct that betting on the 2, Freese should be better in 2017 than Adonis.

If the Braves can't get a good deal for a guy like Prado or one of the other 2-3 WAR guys available at 3b, they may as well give Ruiz a shot. Now that Kemp has been plugged into the lineup slot that had the most potential room for improvement, the Braves aren't going to be playing meaningful baseball 12 months from now anyways, so going with Ruiz isn't going to hurt them at all.

I believe that on the whole, our team defense is right in the middle of the league (14th upon my last check). We may struggle on the corners, but we project strong up the middle with Dansby, Albies, and Ender. If we can acquire a strong defensive catcher then I think we can get by with Kemp and Markakis (maybe, unless he's traded).

Quite honestly, I'm still worried about the offense and the starting pitching. We have two stable pieces and a gluttony of question marks.

That's definitely not a result of their decision to light $184,000,000 on fire.

Of course that's assuming Heyward is this bad the rest of his career. I find that notion silly. But I'm glad we can all make fun of the Cubs for paying Heyward 15 million this year while the Braves currently have close to 30 million a year tied up in Markakis and Kemp.

There are trade-offs between Adonis Garcia and say Prado. I would expect Prado to produce about 2 wins more. But he will cost at least 10M more. The right choice depends on how payroll is shaking out relative to budget. For example, we might have a choice to make with respect to trading for McCann. If the Yankees pick up a significant part of his salary we will have to give up a better prospect(s). Going with Adonis might allow us to avoid having to include a significant prospect in a trade for McCann.
