BRAVES OPENING DAY ROSTER

As mentioned below, A.J. re-signs for 1 year, $3 million ($1 signing bonus, $2 million base and $1 million incentives). Took less to stay.

Braves added only Gant and Mallex Smith to 40-man at deadline, include Krol. Going into winter meetings with 40-man roster set at 38, and Paco Rodriguez could go back on 60-day DL to create another slot.

I think Rodriguez would have to stay on the 60-day DL through the Rule 5 draft. I could be wrong on that, but every team in the league would be opening up slots or protecting more guys if that weren't the case.

Sounds like the braves are bringing back david carpenter

Amazing that this bad team continues to get worse and they seem to do this with ease. Credit goes to the front office for making these decisions that negatively affect the team with such ease. They are really good at it.

I don't know why anyone would be upset about signing Carpenter. It's literally a no risk move. It's not like we're bringing him in to be our closer or something. We're seeing if he can recapture the magic and be a middle reliever.

Yeah, for real. One of the few entertaining things about this season is going to be panning for gold on cheapo acquisitions, ml invitees, and Rule 5 guys.

Minor league free agent signings:

The Braves have signed minor league FA C Willians Astudillo, who (it is mentioned in another thread) has been the toughest player to strike out in all of organized baseball.

The Braves have also signed former Marlins (among others) SS Reid Brignac. Also played for Tampa, Colorado, Yankees, Phillies. Bats lefty.

Brandon Snyder - 3B - Braves

Braves signed INF Brandon Snyder to a minor league contract.

Snyder, 29, hasn't played in the majors since 2013 and spent a chunk of 2015 in independent ball. The Braves are rebuilding, but he's almost surely nothing more than a depth signing.

Jordy Lara - 1B - Braves

Braves signed INF Jordy Lara to a minor league contract.

Lara, 24, hit a disappointing .242/.308/.377 with seven homers in his first full season at Double-A with the Mariners in 2015, but that was after he batted .337/.392/.581 with 26 homers between High- and Double-A in 2014. He could make his major league debut at some point in 2016.

The Braves have announced the signings of ten players to minor league contracts, each of which includes an invitation to major league camp. Righty David Carpenter is perhaps the most notable, but the list includes several other recognizable names. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported Carpenter’s signing on Twitter.

Joining Carpenter in Atlanta’s camp this spring will be fellow righties Chris Volstad and Madison Younginer. Also reporting early for camp will be four catchers: former big leaguer Ryan Lavarnway, along with Willians Astudillo, Matt Kennelly, and Braeden Schlehuber. Veteran infielders Reid Brignac and Chase d’Arnaud, as well as outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo, are also joining the Braves.

Some interesting names. Brignac may have a chance to go North if he can hit some.

Brignac will compete with Ciriaco and Castro for the utility infielder job. I like Castro but think it would be better for him and the team for him to play full time in AAA for at least half the season.

AAA infield looks like this: Castro at short, Brignac or Ciriaco at second, Adonis Garcia at third, Terdoslavich at first. D'Arnaud as the utility player.

I'm guessing we sign someone like Kelly Johnson for the ML team which would push Adonis Garcia to AAA.

AAA outfield looks like Mallex Smith in center, the mystery man Toscano in left and Tuiasosopo in right.

Lavernway will be the main catcher.

I don't think Adonis will be in AAA. Indications at the end of the season were that he did more than enough for a shot at the starters spot
