BRAVES OPENING DAY ROSTER

Less than two months ago, three of Atlanta's top four prospects weren't even in the Braves system. Less than two months from now, they'll get a chance to make a lasting first impression on their new club.

Atlanta's No. 1 prospect Dansby Swanson, No. 2 Sean Newcomb and No. 4 Aaron Blair, all trade acquisitions since mid-November, join No. 3 Braves prospect Ozhaino Albies at big league Spring Training camp with non-roster invitations. In total, 10 of the club's top 13 prospects are ticketed for Orlando next month.

Atlanta's other top ranked prospects headed for Spring Training are right-handers Tyrell Jenkins (No. 7), Lucas Sims (No. 10) and Chris Ellis (No. 11), who was acquired from the Angels with Newcomb, lefty Manny Banuelos (No. 8), third baseman Rio Ruiz (No. 12) and outfielder Braxton Davidson (No. 13), Atlanta's first-round pick in 2014. Only Jenkins and Banuelos are on Atlanta's 40-man roster.

Rankings are those of MiLB.com.

Preseason roster now has all 27 non-rosoter invitees, including hero of Carolina bus crash, catcher Joe Odom.

Ryan Kelly, Nate Freiman, Hunter Cervenka also among those not previously confirmed.

The Braves settled with reliever Arodys Vizcaino, one of only two arby eligible players, for $897,500, Mark Bowman tweets. He had a $1.1MM projection entering the fall.

Braves also wrapped up Chris Withrow for $610 K. That was last Thursday, but it was my birthday and I was at the movies all day (Hateful 8 and 13 Hours).

Only two arb guys on the roster. So that's that.

A few of the uniform numbers have been assigned, at least for camp purposes.

Carlos Torres invited to camp with minor league deal, added to list of now-19 non-roster camp invites.

Slowly but surely adding the jersey numbers to the roster. Some changes among the veterans, too: Garcia is going with 13, for example.

BRAVES COME THROUGH

All 2016 jersey changes are reflected in OP roster

FIRST CUTS (March 5th)

Released: David Carpenter, Ryan Kelly

Optioned: Matt Tuiososopo, surplus catchers, not-ready-for-prime-time Braxton Davidson

Am I the only one really surprised by this?

I was a little at first. With Grilli, Vizcaino, Withrow, and Johnson potentially ready to start the season and Simmons not far behind, my guess is that they'd rather give longer looks to the younger guys.

MLBTR has scooped the Braves' beat guys -- again -- with the news that theyhave signed LHP Phil Coke to a minor league deal. No word if he has a camp invite.

Coke, who with a last name like that was destined to pitch in Atlanta, is another guy who had a horrible 2015 season but was effective with the Tigers in 2014. Good ground ball pitcher when effective and obviously takes the place of injured Andrew McKirahan in the overall scheme of things.

No camp invite FWIW.

Could be a pretty decent LOOGY. Although he's in the minor league camp without a big league invite, he'll likely pitch in some exhibition games. I wouldn't be surprised to see him with the major league team at some point during the season. It doesn't say if Coke's contract has an opt-out (and opt-out date), but it's likely there's a June 1 date for Coke to determine whether or not he wants to become a free agent.

We don't have much depth in the left-handed relief department, so it makes sense to kick the tires on guys like Coke.

14 players moves (see thread). Camp roster down to 49. Sounds like a lot less than 70, but a lot more than 25!
