Braves sign Bourjos

I never thought it made sense to stack the bench with defensive specialists...maybe one guy who can play short...the defensive guys should mainly be in AAA to be called up when injuries strike...i'd rather have some solid bats on the major league bench...i guess Tucker will be our main lefty pinch hitter when Acuna comes up

Yeah, having Culberson and Flaherty is the one that has me puzzled. Really, Culberson is the guy that makes the least sense at this point. We have 3 other guys on the roster that can play SS, so we don't really need much - if any - coverage there. Our 3 starting infielders (Camargo, Swanson, Albies) all hit better against LHP, so Flaherty complements them better than Culberson when it comes to giving someone a day off against a tough RHP.

So at this point, the 5-man bench is probably: Suzuki, Bourjos, Flaherty, Culberson, and Adams. Once we need a 5th starter, it comes down to Culberson or Adams being subjected to waivers since both are out of options.

I think Stewart is in play. They have been discussing carrying a third catcher. With Flowers battling a slight injury it makes some sense.

This is huge news in 2011, along with the end of the Harry Potter film franchise and the release of Midnight in Paris, written and directed by Woody Allen, a Hollywood legend whose reputation is likely to remain rock solid for decades to come.

Good call. I think Adams is likely to pass through waivers. If we could get Stewart to give us a handshake deal that he'll accept the assignment to AAA when the 5th starter is needed, I'd go that route over Adams.

That wouldn't be wise, you want to have someone with speed to steal bases on your bench. This may just mean Santana who is on a minor league deal goes to Gwinnett with the new additions making the team.

The sequencing would be...

1.) Keep Adams as the 6th OF and speed guy (Ender, Markakis, Tucker, Bourjos, Carrera, Adams) until a 5th starter is needed.

2.) Send Santana to Gwinnett.

3.) DFA Carrera to create the 5th SP's spot on April 10th and then Adams to create Acuna's roster spot in mid-April.

Come April 14th, you have Ender, Markakis, Acuna, Tucker (pinch-hitter), and Bourjos (defensive replacement/speed-guy) in Atlanta with Peterson, Santana, James, and Avery in Gwinnett. DFA Adams at that point and resign him (or Carrera) if unclaimed.

How many AAAA OFs do you want? If they really are talking to Bautista, it becomes that much MORE crowded.

I would’ve gone with, “and the second season of Louis CK’s nakedly raw, inimitable auteur-driven comedy series, which rockets him to the pinnacle of the comic profession for decades to come.”

Don't see what he provides over Lane Adams.. I think they're basically the same player, but Adams has at least a bit of upside

Wut?

Bourjos has about 2250 PA with about 10 rWAR. Adams has about 125 PA and a .5 rWAR. Adams is about 2 years and 6 months younger than Bourjos. Adams's career AA OPS is .777. Bourjos you at least know what you're getting. Doesn't hit, runs well, and defends well. I think Adams may be better right now as a starter in LF because he can hit a bit better than Bourjos probably. I think Bourjos is much more valuable in 3 weeks when Acuna comes up cause I'd much rather see him in CF than Adams when Inciarte needs time off.

Meh, this is probably the best 4th OFer the Braves could have hoped for at this point with the little bit of money they have left to spend.

A Bautista signing really makes things interesting when you think about it. He and Tucker platoon (with Bourjos as your 4th OF) until Acuna comes up (and then he and Markakis) and you cut Carrera and Adams while tucking Santana's versatility away in Gwinnett.

Are we serious about joey Bautista? If so, platoon him and nick after acuna comes up

Adams is a bad defender, strikes out 30% of the time, and benefitted from a high BABIP last year. He can’t back up center.

He’s probably not a player worth worrying about.

If they are serious about upgrading defense then this is a move that makes some sense.

Would Adams even get claimed?

Snit didn't use a defensive sub when he had kemp and garcia.

I think the market option here is to find a guy who is all bat and no glove. With Acuna's ability to play CF, Comargo's versatility, and Albies' ability to play SS I think we should have gone for hitters on the bench, not fielders.

The Flaherty and Bourjos deals will most likely affect Carrera and Santana, who are on Minor League deals that don’t include opt outs.

Unlike Lane Adams who is on the 40-man and out of options, Carrera and Santana can be directly placed on Gwinnett’s roster
