Braves sign Bourjos

Flaherty over Culberson does make some sense. Flaherty and Culberson doesnt.

I disagree, Flaherty's weakest position is short. He isn't good there, not terrible, but he has a -8 DRS there. Culberson is a plus defender at short and that is important to have in a back-up. It's not like either of them have a track record for hitting much. Though Culberson had a great playoffs this past season.

That said, I do agree that we don't need to carry both but I wouldn't choose Flaherty over Culberson at this point. I could possibly see doing so later when one has to go if Flaherty hits a lot better but I wouldn't expect that with his track record.

PS: I am wondering if Flaherty doesn't start at third over Ruiz till Camargo is ready.

Good call. I think Adams is likely to pass through waivers. If we could get Stewart to give us a handshake deal that he'll accept the assignment to AAA when the 5th starter is needed, I'd go that route over Adams.

Flowers is starting tonight so it seems he is good to go. If so I don't see a need to carry Stewart. I disagree that Adams is likely to pass through waivers. He did good enough pinch hitting and starting late last year that someone should take a flyer on him, if for no other reason than having great speed to steal bases off the bench.

Yea I’d like to read a justification for preferring Flaherty to Culberson. I agree that carrying both doesn’t seem necessary, but given the composition of the roster, Culberson seems the superior choice between the two.

So far the reports from both Bowman and DOB support what I suggested here that maybe this just means Santana and Carrera go to AAA. In that case the moves make sense, as it gives you depth in AAA even though I wouldn't argue that we really upgraded the MLB team. We added depth to the organization and options to decide on later.

The depth is fine, but it might be nice to have one no-bat guy that can play competent SS (Culberson, in this case), and then a second MIF that can actually hit a little. But hopefully Camargo will be filling both those niches once the Braves are actually competitive again.

I agree, but it seems clear they didn't plan for Camargo starting on the DL and had little to no depth at third. I don't think Flaherty is the answer, but he could be DFA'd later and possibly end up back in Baltimore. When they have to talk up Ruiz who isn't even hitting much in ST and have him starting at third. That shows how bad our depth is at third, outside of Camargo our third base options don't hit enough to be in MLB IMO. Hopefully Riley changes that soon.

I've been out of touch, but these latest signings don't make too much sense to me. I like the fact AA is focusing on defense, but I hope he doesn't overcompensate and forget we have to score some runs as well.

This is getting confusing. On Sunday, Bowman said they added Flaherty because they were worried that Culberson was the only backup infielder. Now they are thinking of optioning Ruiz so that they again have 1 backup infielder? Or maybe they are working to add another infielder?

It sounds like Bowman is just guessing as this is the third view he has posited in recent days, lol. However, I like this latest one better than his DFA Adams one last night.
