Braves sign Cuban OF Dian Toscano to Major League Deal

The Braves have completed the financial specifics on Toscano’s deal and the pact is now pending a physical, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (via Twitter).

My comments: Good thing the Rule 5 Draft is in the morning. :)

PS: I hope we are planning to take Delino Deshields Jr., if he is still available when we pick.

I would like to see that as well, but do we have an open spot on the 40-man roster? If not can we draft someone before we DFA a player?

I should know this, but being one of the older posters here I probably did at one time and simply have forgotten the answer...

We are officially still at 39 due to pending physicals for both Toscano and Callaspo. So we will be able to select someone in the Rule 5 Draft in the morning. But once those physicals complete we will be at 41 players (meaning someone needs to be DFA'd unless traded before hand). Plus if we select someone in the Major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, then we'd also have to DFA another player to make room for him.

That said, it seems the Braves have been waiting to make these deals official due to Rule 5 and/or trade considerations.

Hart: "Look when you have a player the caliber of DeSheilds available, you have to consider the consequences of taking him and the potential upside that could bring, along with the downside if it doesn't work out and straining relationships with the previous clubs when you can't make a spot on the MLB roster for them. Look, we will do our due diligence and decide whether or not he is healthy and capable of performing at a level where we think he needs to be at to make an impact. Look, we will explore all avenues and decide whether or not a specific player or players fit our mold and our needs and whether or not the postives outweight the negative. Look, when you look at a guy like him, you know you have a quality talent that may reach his potential, or he may not, but Look we know he may be the right player at the right time, or maybe the right player at the wrong time, but timing is of utmost importance when you are considering whether or not we are in contention or not, or more focused on development for future contention. Look, where we are at this point in time, we plan on being contenders in a lower capacity the next year or so, and amp up on talent to legitamately win in conjunction with the opening of the new stadium. Look, this really really excites me.

Per @JesseSanchezMLB's report, Toscano will receive $6M through the 4 guaranteed years. The option for 2019 is worth $1.5M. #Braves

Confirmed that Cuban OF Dian Toscano's #Braves contract is 4 yrs, $6M, w/ 5th-yr, $1.5M option. 1st reported by @JesseSanchezMLB

So if Dian is predicted to net us .5 WAR per season then my math shows that we're under paying her by 500 million dollars.

If you assume the market is $7.5m per win, we'd be expecting 0.2 WAR per season (including option). We're basically paying this guy peanuts. He's not a real exciting player, but not a lot at stake here.

Does anyone know how these Cuban FAs work when it comes to minor league options? I'm hoping he has 3 option years.

Scouting reports on Toscano: more a LF, speed to play some CF, not arm for RF. Contact hitter, puts ball in play, doubles not HRs.

I am surprised he got that much because he was expected to get a minor league deal not long before the Braves signed him. So I guess the Braves really like him and/or the interest in him by teams picked up.

I am also curious if our plans for him are left field or if we plan to try him in centerfield to potentially replace BJ Upton at some point.

Can't really see a downside in this. He's worth the money if he just becomes a solid 4th OF. Sounds like he could develop into a decent everyday player too.

A little over 1 million for 4 years, with a 5th year option, good signing.
