Braves sign Drew Smyly

Will say he has good peripherals, but this seems like a huge gamble this early in the offseason when there's alot of rotation options who should sign at a reasonable number. And did it really have to cost 11 million in this market? Payroll has to be higher than expected if AA has 11 mil to spend this quick on a rotation piece when offense is the bigger concern.

It’s a shame the Braves are committing salary to fill a rotation spot that Newcomb or Folty should have claimed (for clarity I’m referring to what they projected to be a few years ago).

It’s not a franchise altering lack of development by any stretch, but we have had back to back seasons where payroll was spent to fill that rotation void instead of 3B or COF.

Meh. Had Folty stayed the course he's making more than 11 million in 2021.

i think, FWIW, AA isn't going to have to spend a ton on the BP.
i think someone like Melancon will be back for fairly cheap. add another guy in that range and your BP is likely set.

I think Gausman signing for 18.9 million says that prices may not be dropping like some have feared. Time will tell.

Which makes it more important that resources are used wisely. Maybe Smyly turns out to be a bargain. The Fangraphs' write-up on him was glowing, but it's based on an extremely small sample size of 26+ innings during an extremely odd season. I thought they'd go hitter first and then try to sweep someone up for the back of the rotation after the non-tenders are issued (someone like Matz if the Mets dropped him).

Keuchel -> Hamels -> Smyly
Donaldson -> Ozuna -> ????

I think AA's plan should be pretty clear by now.

Wonder who the bat will be...

Gausman had a sneaky good year, and got a QO. I think Gaus would probably get 3/36ish even in this market.

Right. But the Giants willing to pay that much for one season for Gausman suggests teams aren't expecting to bottom out their payroll due to the pandemic.

Only deviation from the pattern is that Keuchel was added after the 2019 season started because he sat out until there was no draft pick compensation attached to his signing. Like you, I am extremely curious as to who the bat will end up being.

I keep coming back to one of Brantley/Rosario/Peralta - the extra LH bat that can play everyday regardless of the opposing SP who also doesn't hurt you defensively like Ozuna does to balance the lineup. Then you could non-tender Duvall, Camargo, and Jackson and put that money towards a platoon-mate for Riley, a pen arm, and your backup C and/or SS.

Someone right handed apparently since he got his token lefty starter.

My hope is that we sign Joc Pederson to split with Duvy and trade Riley and a couple pitchers for Bryant.

I'm curious how much Bryant will get in Arb this year. But Smyly + Joc + Bryant shouldn't be that much more than Hamels + Ozuna in 2020. Once again would depend on the type of payroll AA is working with.

one year deals have a lot to recommend themselves

i'm thinking also Soroka might not be ready opening day...we should think of Smyly as potentially giving us what Rich Hill gave the Dodgers for several years

If Bryant could look anything like his old self that’s a great set of deals. Call me skeptical on Bryant with his awful statcast data the last 2 years, coupled with plenty of declining production and more injuries
