Braves sign Matt Capps

We continue to build a solid contender for 2010

Bullpen isn't an issue so don't understand the move. We got Wagner, Saito, Moylan. Not to mention solid veterans like Proctor and Resop. Jesse Chavez probably be the long reliever. I really like this O'Flaherty dude we got from Seattle, and Venters is gonna surprise some people in spring training. And the closer of the future is waiting in the wings in Kimbrel. And Mike Dunn probably can help if he gets his control issues under control. Plus this Medlen kid I really like, might start out his MLB stint in the pen and be a versatile option.

Maybe they're looking for another option though and concerned over Saito's age and reliability to go multiple days in a row? I don't know. Nonetheless go move, gives us more depth, just think the funds could have been used more to acquire some offense.

I didn't even know Matt Capps was still pitching. This is obviously just a minor league deal with him attempting a comeback of sorts. I seriously doubt he makes it back to the Majors.

Technically he is.....he last pitched in the bigs in 2012, though.

It had been far too quiet for the last four days. I was beginning to think the Braves would never make another move,

Silly me.

Matt Capps!

Hasn't pitched in the majors since 2012 due to injuries (shoulder, not TJ). All-star in 2010, dumped by the Nats.

As a rookie, appeared in 85 game for Pirates as he and Torres were used as human sacrifice by Jim Tracy.

By my count #Braves have now signed 20 FAs to minor-league deals this winter, plus 10 trades, 7 FA signings & one waiver claim #isthatall?

Braves are signing up all the pitchers so they can to set themselves up to trade when there is no pitchers left for other teams to sign. Maybe we'll need to trade for two more catchers again at this rate. :)

Speaking of Matt Capps, didn't we almost trade for him like 5-10 years ago? I seem to recall rumors of our interest back when he was still a Pirate and possibly at two different times.

and barely pitched in the minors the last two years. Just five innings in the instructional league last year. Shoulder injuries. A very longshot.

Yep. But you know the Braves had to bring someone big in to eat Harang and Laird's portion. Maybe Capps can get that done for us. If not just call Bowman down to eat whatever is left. :)

He said in an interview last April that he would give it one more shot in 2015 upon finding out his 2014 season was kaput. Will retire if he doesn't make it back. Feel that this is still the scenario, and Capps might know quickly how he'll move forward or not.

I am sure he appreciates the Braves giving him a shot, esp. since he is from Georgia and likely grew up a Braves fan. I wish him the best making it back but I find it unlikely given his injury history and all the time he's missed. Bowman adds that Capps will likely begin the season with Gwinnett should his comeback go better this time.
