Braves sign OF Marcell Ozuna to 1 yr, 18 Million.

If AA can get Bryant or Arenado without any of Pache/Anderson/Waters, tell me why not?

Because then you'll have a hole in LF next season all over again, and Waters would be starting for the Cubs or Rockies.

There's absolutely no reason to "pile on" and try to make another big splash when it's 20 degrees outside. The Ozuna addition all but guarantees the team as currently constructed will still be in contention in July barring major injuries. Be patient and see what Pache, Waters, and Riley do during the first couple months - you may be in a position to cash Ender and Camargo in come July, and if the right team(s) fall out of it by that point you just might be able to trade for the young, controllable "Ace" (Clevinger or Bieber) everybody's dying to get.

The Phillies "won" last winter - how'd that work out?

While Ozuna is a war downgrade to JD, this deal is light years better than signing JD for $90M.

Now it makes sense to add a LHH 3b that slots in behind the top 4 in the lineup. Who wants to start compiling options?

Travis Shaw made a ton of sense, but we were waiting on JD...

Eduardo Escobar anyone?

Sigh, I know that ship probably sailed after the D'backs signaled trying to compete by signing Bumgarner, but a dude can dream.

Luxury tax thresh hold?? I don't understand how an OD payroll of about 160M can translate to over 186M for luxury tax.

From MLBTR

However, Ozuna’s contract pushes the Braves up to a franchise-record $158MM projected payroll, and perhaps even more surprisingly, they’re at $186MM worth of luxury obligations, per Roster Resource’s Jason Martinez. A Nolan Arenado acquisition has long appeared unlikely but looks even less plausible now, as acquiring him would push the Braves over the luxury threshold for the first time in franchise history. Even a deal to bring Kris Bryant over from the Cubs would leave Atlanta just a couple million shy of the $208MM barrier.

Why on earth would you even answer the phone if you're AA and Chicago or Colorado calls at this point???

You've "solved Freddie's protection" without blocking Pache or Waters or giving up a single arm, and there's absolutely no reason you can't leave Riley in Gwinnett for the entire season now.

If he answers the phone before the deadline at this point, he's nuts.

Because Bryant and Arenado are better 3B than Johan Camargo and Austin Riley. That’s the reason.

And moving Greene/Ender/Melancon/Duvall would basically offset that salary.

Unless we send Melancon to Colorado, we kind of don't have the money for Arenado, even if Colorado eats in a decent portion of that contract per year.

Brock Holt is basically it.

That’s very valid, but I was just answering his question about why we’d want an All-Star 3B.

AA did such a good job of building a stacked bullpen, losing one arm I wouldn't mind but multiple? Would make me worry again.

I wouldnt move both, i'd do one if we had to shed some salary. I do prefer to have a backend of Martin/MM/Greene/Jackson/Smith though, that's a very very good backend with O'Day/Dayton or Minter or Newk and whoever at the 8th spot.

While destroying your bench and bullpen.

No need to add another expensive player and creating more holes while trading away the pieces that make you a deep team. Trade those guys and suddenly your bench has Culberson and Solarte and your pen has Minter and Sobotka.

Arenado, Bryant, and Seager will likely be there to be had in July if AA needs to trade for them at that point.
