By the numbers, Pierzynski was one of the best backup catchers available. Good defender, left-handed bat that hits RHP well (for a backup catcher).

But there is no mystery about the fact this guy is a clubhouse problem . . . everyone in the league knows it. You can accommodate that if you have a veteran pitching staff, a veteran primary catcher, and a coach like Bobby Cox who is great when it comes to managing the clubhouse culture. We have none of those.
