Braves sniffing around on Markakis; Official 4 years 44 million.

"The Braves are essentially betting that UZR and DRS are so systematically wrong that they add no real information even after 12,000 innings of data collection"

I think that's a pretty fair assesement considering what they signed Markaksis to and that they didn't see Heyward as a true 5 WAR player.

I know you violently disagree....but I don't think it's "the world is flat" position. They have Capps to be the saber guy.

In terms of WAR:

Markakis - 2.5

Aoki - 2.3

Boni - 2.1

Morse - 1

Rasmus - .6

Rios - .2

I would've signed Aoki, shorter deal and way less money.

I still think Aoki would have been the ideal signing. Cheaper, shorter contract, and nearly identical production to Markakis.

We may still see someone like Boni or Rasmus picked up for CF. The cash is certainly there once JUp is traded.

I agree. If you are going to be bad with a goal of 2017, then don't sign anyone that isn't a key piece to more than 2 years.

I am guessing this is part of a "re-loading" plan. There isn't the incentive in MLB like other sports to bottom out. So I think there is a sequence. This is clearly leading to JUp being dealt. And it wouldn't shock me if there is a plan to do some more deals, maybe Minor, with the idea of having a team that could contend if a couple of guys have career years. I don't agree with it, but it seems like it is happening.

Sure. But how much say does he have? Seems to me this is the JS and JH show.

no idea. But maybe he doesn't put much stock in defensive metrics. Maybe the braves have some formula where 3 or 5 offensive war = 1 defensive war. Maybe it depends on position. I know WAR evaluates w/i a position but they may not value RF like you value RF.

Seems that way, and until they're dealt, it seems like the organization is banking on BJ and CJ having good years, along with Simmons improving.

It's not crazy to think FF could be better. Makes sense that CJ and Simmons could be better. 2B was awful, so it wouldn't take much to do better there. CF was awful, so maybe BJ can get back to replacement level.....hard to say.

C clearly won't hit as well, but maybe C is where they really value defensive metrics. I didn't think CB looked elite as a catcher but it seems like every scout (who should know more than me) say he's elite.

Maybe the division is so good that everyone beats up on each other and 88 wins win it. It could happen. I wouldn't bet a fiver on it, but it's not as impossible as saying Gattis could become an avg LF.

I guess Markakis smells like mothballs and jello pudding pops?

The only Aoki that the Braves should have pursued this offseason is Steve Aoki. He would be so much better than that goofy ass organist in the DJ booth -- and he's heir to Benihana, wouldn't that have looked great out in right field beside the Chick-Fil-A cow?

But seriously, Nori Aoki? A niece piece on a team with other legitimate talents (ie. not the Braves).

Nope. Although if we revisit this once Aoki signs, it's probable that he will have been overpaid to the point where choosing Markakis becomes a no-brainer.

Im not sure.....and largely because of the injury issue (neck) and decline the past two years.

If Markakis wasn't a Georgia boy, would he have been signed?

Markakis is so old I bet he has loaves of bread in the freezer.

Markakis is so old he gives 5 dollar checks on his kids birthdays.
