Braves Spring Training news and roster competition

Blue Jays sign Franklin Morales to a $2 million contract. I thought he was the best of the lefty relievers currently available. There are some other decent ones. Braves have been mentioned as potentially interested in Sean Burnett.

Nats just released Burnett officially this morning. I think they had 48 hours to either add him to the 25-man or release him after he exercised his opt out.

Brad Hand is another lefty (currently in DFA limbo) that I'd have interest in. Last season he had a strikeout rate of 8.8 and walk rate of 1.8 against lefties.

Another option by the way side. It's starting to look like the Braves aren't looking to offer an MLB deal.

I will be very surprised if they don't at least work Burnett out this weekend.

I feel sorry for EOF's left arm.

We'll get an early idea when we play the gnats and Cards how the one lefty in the pen thing is going to work. Both teams usually feature at least four lefty bats in their lineups against a right handed starting pitcher. The combination of us having five right-handed starting pitchers and just one lefty in the pen is going to lead to some interesting situations.

That's a good price given the season Morales is coming off. Braves should've signed him. Burnett did OK in ST but he's another like EOF that may not have much if anything left. Neither have the velocity they had previously, etc. I rather add Burnett for AAA and add someone more likely to have success for MLB.

It's a little ironic to me the whole righty-lefty thing was the primary (public) reason given for Bourn being let go and having to pay him $14 million to do nothing or play for someone else. And yet we couldn't find a second lefty reliever out of the 75 freaking people we had out there this spring.
