Braves To Split From Liberty Media July 18

I would think good. If the Braves are profitable, like they appear to be now, more money will be spent on the team.

This SHOULD be good given the money the Bravos bring in, but I'm not a finance bro so I'll let someone else explain it to me.

Where does The Battery fit into the discussion? I honestly don't know where that has fit in before. Who actually owns the stadium complex. Liberty or a public/private partnership (or all public or all private)?

I think this is good as long as the Braves are good (which looks to be the case for at least the near future). As in most industries, cash is king.

Don't miss that last sentence in the story:

"The move, however, continues to raise speculation the Braves could ultimately be sold post-split. The New York Mets, the last MLB club to be sold, fetched a then-record $2.4 billion in 2020."

From an article last year:

"Atlanta Braves Holdings would hold all of the businesses, assets and liabilities currently attributed to the Braves Group, including Braves Holdings, LLC, which is the direct or indirect owner and operator of the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball Club, certain assets and liabilities associated with the Atlanta Braves’ stadium and mixed use development project, The Battery Atlanta, and corporate cash."

Thanks for the info. Anyone know the vacancy rate on the commercial space? I thought that might be a problem especially after COVID hit and more companies allowed some measure of remote work and reduced their physical footprint. Don't know if that will affect The Battery at all.

There was a time not too long ago when a sale of the team would be preferable. Now, I'm not so sure. Things are running so smoothly, the payroll is beyond probably what most of us thought it could be at this point, and the future continues to be very bright. Most importantly, Liberty allows the Braves baseball people to do their jobs and doesn't meddle in the day to day.

Totally agree. Our ownership situation seems pretty ideal right now. Of course we'd all be open to the team selling to someone or some organization that would allow payroll to go even higher, but I'd rather just stay with current ownership rather than risk an overbearing owner who muddies things up. Payroll isn't a huge concern right now.

So, I guess Liberty will still own majority stake, it will just be a separate entity able to be publicly traded on its own. Probably nothing to see here as far as team management is concerned.

So if I remember correctly the current structure of the Braves-Liberty arrangement is Liberty can't profit or tank the Braves. It can't take or steal any money from the Braves. Braves had autonomy from Liberty making any major decisions. This means technically Liberty coudlnt sell the Braves for a profit either.

But now thst they're individual holding company, with Liberty getting a majority share, it is possible for a big money Joe Schmoe to buy all the minority stakes, then eventually offer to buy out Liberty for the remaining majority control.

The Braves are currently one of the most attractive organizations in all of sports. They have a phenomenal core signed to reasonable, long term contracts. 2 years off a World Series, with a chance to get another one this season. Then throw in the money they get from the Battery....

On top of that, we are only a few seasons away from being able to get a whole new TV contract.

Not sure on the reliability, but that article says the Braves are currently valued around $2.6B
