I'm not saying we got an impact bat but a lot of scouting reports project him as a solid hitting everyday catcher with some power regardless of where he played last season. If you get a potential everyday position player for 5th starter/long reliever you made a smart move.

Jose Briceno, C Video: Briceno is a young catcher still working on the finer points defensively, but the athleticism and tools are there to stick behind the plate and the arm is plus. The raw power is average and there’s just enough feel to hit that he could get to it in games. It’s a longshot but potential everyday catchers don’t grow on trees, so scouts are more than willing to give Briceno a chance.

So because you have a prospect who just made his debut in the majors it means you should stop building depth below him in the minors? Nobody is 100% sold on Bethancourt but this trade has nothing to do with him. We clearly like Briceno and he easily becomes the #1 catching prospect in our system. This deepens our system and adds another solid potential long term C for a fringe starter/long reliever.
 
Read on Twitter Saturday that Briceno will have to go on 40-man roster or clear waivers. Was a red-hot hitter in winter league:

Briceño was .308/.296/1.308 6 HR and 9 RBI in 11 games in Venezuelan league this year.

Are you talking about what DOB posted? If so, see my post above. As I noted in my above post, I know he'll have to go on the 40-man roster after this season because otherwise he'll be a minor league free agent. But I don't see why he'd need to be added at this point in time.
 
I'm not losing sleep over this one. Hale isn't really that good, he's at best a #5 if things work out for him. He will get torched in Colorado, though.
Briceno from what I read does not at all have the same strengths/weaknesses as Bethancourt. He's still improving, and I've seen people other than fangraphs state he has legit power (and someone noted the Braves liked his power potential). I won't be at all surprised if he's a better player in the long run than Bethancourt, simply because he has a chance to put up an OPS higher than .580 in the majors
