Braves trade for Chris Sale - Grissom going to Red Sox (Extension through 26 at 18M)

Sportrac and a couple other sources describe it as a club option that could vest to a guarantee if certain benchmarks are hit. So I believe the Braves will control Sale’s rights in 2025 if they choose.

Very cool! If he's indeed back for a couple more years, could be a real bargain. Similar to Greinke, Sale's one of those guys I always thought would be a Brave... just a bit later than I expected lol

This is a tremendous deal, especially now that I’ve been able to see the financials. There are obviously legitimate concerns there, but Sale’s upside is… well, it’s Chris Sale. And this is a tremendous rotation when healthy:

Fried
Strider
Sale
Morton
Elder

My only surprise is that AA acquired an injury-prone player when he has clearly valued durability this offseason.

Leave it to the social media Braves fans who severely overrate Vaughn Grissom while comparing Sale to 2020 Cole Hamels.

I think it’s hard for them to look at his ‘23 performance and not remember ‘20-22, and they’re still butt hurt that he got hurt and missed three years. And truthfully we’re taking a gamble assessing his last third of a year and thinking that is what we’re getting. OTOH, it’s not costing us $27.5M to find out.

I very highly doubt it would happen, but it sure would be nice to pick up one more durable prove 3... like Stroman... I think they want to keep Elder in the rotation, though.

Agreed. I think Sale fills a hole for the postseason but I wouldn’t mind some reliable regular season innings, especially since we will need to protect some of these guys’ arms for the postseason.
