Braves purchased the contract of LHP Carlos Perez from High-A Lynchburg.

Perez is now on the Braves' 40-man roster and protected from December's Rule 5 Draft. The 22-year-old left-hander posted a 2.76 ERA and 52/19 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings this summer in Atlanta's minor league system.

Braves purchased the contract of INF Elmer Reyes from High-A Lynchburg.

Reyes, who turns 23 on November 26, hasn't played above A-ball in five seasons as a professional. Playing a majority of his games at shortstop in 2013 with Lynchburg in the Carolina League, he hit .285 with a .728 OPS.

The addition of Perez and Reyes seem premature to me. Neither has played above High A. I doubt either was in any danger of being taken in the Rule 5 draft.

The more interesting move was the addition of Luis Vasquez. BA's Jim Cooper put out this tweet about him:

Braves do an amazing job of finding cheap talent for their bullpen, Luis Vasquez fits that profile perfectly.

Thats a great sign that Perez was added to the 40 man. Braves must have been please with what they saw. The hype on him 3-4 years ago was pretty intense but he just kept fighting injuries. I could see him seeing the bullpen early in 2015.

Who is this Luis Vasquez?

There are several Luis Vasquezes who are RHP. I assume it is the one who pitched in the Dodgers' farm system the last few years. He is listed as a six-year free agent.

Probably needed to put Perez on. Some AL team could set him in the bullpen as the 12th/13th guy. That's what the Twins did with Johan Santana years ago. Don't think they needed to put Reyes on. Vasquez is an interesting prospect.

Edit: BA has Reyes as a "possible" Rule 5 pick, but didn't think his bat was ready enough for someone to risk a pick. His bat may never be ready.

I wonder if we will try to sign a lefty reliever or two to a minor league deal. We need to build some depth there.

I see the Gnats just designated Fernando Abad for assignment. He might be worth a look.

There are also a number of six year free agents that might be worth having in AAA: Juan Perez, Ryan Feierabend, Nick Additon, Greg Smith, Justin Hampson

Right now Buchter is the only lefty we have slated for the Gwinnett pen.

Braves purchased the contract of RHP Luis Vasquez from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Vasquez was signed to a minor league deal earlier this month and had to be added to the 40-man roster in order to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft. The 27-year-old put up a 2.52 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 35 2/3 frames between Double- and Triple-A with the Dodgers in 2013.

LH Ryan Buchter, recently added to #Braves 40-man, has 0.79 ERA in 11 appearances in Mexico this winter, w/ 22 K, 7 BB, 4 H in 11-1/3 IP

Didnt we get him for Rodrigo Lopez?

Wren wins again.
