Carlos Quentin

CyYoung31

Shift Leader
Why did we release this guy again? I know the guy has had trouble staying on the field, and I know that he's pretty awful defensively and offers zero versatility. But, the guy can mash. Wouldn't he be a better option than Jonny Gomes who only plays one position poorly and can't hit? I know we're not trying to contend this year, but Quentin is someone who could have garnered a decent amount of value at the trade deadline if he had stayed healthy.

Is 2 million really that important?

Yeah, if we saved $50-odd mil in the trade, it wouldn't seem to be such a big deal.

Is he officially gone?

DFA'd and that process takes 10 days. My guess is that no team will claim him because they know the Braves are intent on releasing him. The Braves will owe him the difference between his current contract and whatever another team signs him for (which will likely be the minimum unless there is a bidding war for his services). I thought he'd be a better option than Gomes as well, but Gomes appears to play Designated Leader.

Since we are unlikely to save a dime by letting him go (barring a surprise trade) I'd kept him over Gosselin to give us a right handed power bat off the bench if nothing else. Peterson can back-up short while both KJ and Callaspo play the same positions too. So why do we need so many 2B?

Apparently his defense is epicly bad nowadays I am told from some Padre fans. Like, much worse than Gomes (who is also awful on defense). He's primarily a bad 1b/DH now.

Could have used him as the 1st bat off the bench I guess, but it looks like they would rather have the position flexibility of guys like KJ and Callaspo.

I really don't think we could play Quentin in the field at all. He's supposedly pretty much strictly a DH. Would you put David Ortiz in left field right now?
Some of you please don't answer that.
But, his defense and health are really, really poor.

I'd cite his being a dick as part of the reason ... but tonight's starting-catcher ...

Man: these former White Sox, am I right? I guess the Northside has douche-bag fans, the Southside has douche-bag players.

Braves didn't want to trade for him, they aren't going to release Gomes (as he's one of the team leaders). If they wanted a guy like Quentin they would have just kept Gattis and let him play LF. They obviously don't want a player that is a huge liability defensively.

All I really know about Carlos Quentin is that he must be a brick-house mother****er to have broken Zach Greinke's clavicle with nothing more than a lowered shoulder. Riding a bicycle on the reg is about the best way to ensure that you break a collarbone, and I did that for 20 years, including all manner of dumb, drunken ****, before I managed to pop one. Even at that it took a moment of seriously insufficient radness and a 6-foot drop onto pea-gravel-covered rock before I broke mine. I'm in favor of having Quentin on the roster just on the off chance that he gets to take a run at Strasburg.

That's funny, what do you think Gomes is defensively? He's as much a DH type as anyone.
