Carlos Ruiz

The Tariff King

Trade War Deadline Winner

what's everyone's thoughts on him currently. He's hitting very well right now. I'd honestly keep him at 3rd and trade Adonis asap. 3 more hits today just keeps raking.

As a full-time player, I'd expect him to produce an OPS in the .650-.700 range.

As a platoon player, I'd expect him to have an OPS in the .700-.750 range.

Adonis Garcia's splits data show him with a career major league OPS of .680 against righties and .839 against lefties.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Go with the platoon.

I think he's just a dude. But maybe worth playing for a couple of years and hoping TD or Riley really is an avg 3B starter or better.

The Garcia, Rio paring seems too obvious....not sure why we aren't doing it. Rio is a young who they want to play everyday but he's the LH side of the platoon and would play most days. The splits work out well. Neither guy is expensive.

I think he's a solid guy. But if he's your 3B you likely want him hitting 6-8. Swanson looks like an 8th hitter right now. If we are going to have a corner be that low then we need to make up that production somewhere else and I'm not sure where we do. B/c I like Albies but I don't see him making up for Ruiz's lack of pop. It's not coming from CF. C is doing some of that now, but I don't believe in that long term.

I think Demeritte (sp?) could fill that void of pop if he can make it @ 3rd. Ruiz may just be a season or 2 placeholder.

If a Rio/Adonis platoon works, the team could go cheap at third, freeing up some funds that could be used elsewhere. The two most obvious areas of need for next year are third and starting pitching. How Rio/Adonis does and how guys like Newcomb, Sims and Weigel do the rest of this year will determine which area the front office focuses on.

There's no reason in a season like this not to get Rio Ruiz a lot of ABs, that can easily be accomplished in a platoon.

I just don't see anyone worth buying next year....

I think 3B, SS, 2B RF and C are areas. I think a Rio/Adonis Platoon could be ok. If SRod was back and playing like last year I'd feel even better. I think Swanson will hit better. I think Albies will hit, but I still think he's more valuable at SS. For a 2B I'm not sure he'll be a plus hitter. C is good now, but I don't believe in it. Neck is an avg hitter but in a corner I'd like better, esp considering he is not a great defender.

I am likely optimistic but I feel like we should be able to get solid production out of 3 of Newcombe, Sims, Fried, Weigel, Wisler, Blair and mid level vets who may be around. If Weigel and Newcombe are our 4th and 5th starters I think we can be pretty good. Dickey could be the long man.

If the defense translates over well it won't be that big of a deal between SS and 2B. SS have a 707 OPS on the year and 2B have a 721 OPS. If they get a 700 OPS out of Albies with plus defense and speed he will be a quality player. Between Swanson and Albies I always wanted the better defender to play at short regardless of their bats.

Agree 117%. Platoons are one way a midmarket team competes. I think this one would OPS .775-.800, and that'd be fine for now.

Ruiz has been a .750 OPS guy in AAA. You apply about a 10% haircut to get his major league equivalent and he is in the .650-.700 range. But this is as a regular. If his at bats against lefties are limited, he has a good shot at something in the .700-750 range in the majors.

Ruiz vs RHP in minors

2017: 291/343/496 - 839

2016: 294/373/460 - 842

Garcia vs LHP in majors

2017: 308/438/538 - 976

2016: 302/362/403 - 765

A platoon has never been more obvious

Who then goes on to start for multiple championship teams.

Yep. Despite these types of players not being sexy on the statlines, they're the type of guys you need to have on championship teams. Blanco had some clutch hits throughout the playoffs in those Giants WS runs.

Assuming that platoon posts a combined .280/.330/.430 (.760 OPS) line with average or slightly worse defense at 3b, what kind of WAR does that translate to from the position as a whole? 2-3?
