Cashner to the Marlins

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a superfan but there are reasons for optimism on his outlook. Its not raining turds as far as his projection goes as you seem to think. He is a nice get for two RAGINGLY mediocre pitchers. Not to mention Castillo...

Since 11, Cashner has thrown 755 innings with a 3.65 ERA and 3.65 FIP. That is pretty damn solid. Im not saying Naylor is a dud, but he's not some super prospect either. He's just a decent prospect that is a long ways away.

People just tend to overate prospects. Every single trade that has been made is "What a steal!" by the selling team. It's not always the case.

Cashner has regressed the last two years though. He's not the same guy who was traded for Rizzo at one point. He has had a few good starts recently. It's a crapshoot either way on him though.

Padres current rotation: Cosart, Clemens, Perdomo, Friedrich, Jackson.

I'm not ready to count them out as a competitor for the top draft pick, even though we have a nine-game lead over them right now.

That is horrible. Like, no doubt worse than ours. lol

They actually have an offense though so they should be able to maintain the "lead."

Petco isn't the pitchers haven it use to be. Cashner has been horrible since he's not pitching in the best pitchers park in the league

I think the Padres have done an even better job than the Braves did with their rebuild. Add in their enormous J2 class and they have done an excellent job. Their US draft was a bit of a head scratcher though if I remember correctly.

you are correct. the US draft was awful.. but they have really maxed out returns and spent a boat load on J2. Preller saved his butt pretty impressively.

I'm not a fan of these prospects but it's a great get for what they gave up.

At this rate we should pitch Gant and if he has one good start flip him for a top 100 bat.

Im not sure what people see in Naylor. He's a long ways away and isn't really doing anything impressive. The guy may struggle to even play first base and is not lighting the world on fire with his bat to make up for it. He was overdrafted at 12 (49th ranked prosepct by Law, 61 by BA). He was a huge reach bc they wanted "lefthanded power."

He could end up being a solid prospect, but I don't think he's a big time return at all. Seems like a fair trade for both sides.

Naylor would be like us trading Austin Riley. Big-time power potential but a long ways away. Have to remember he's a Canadian kid so he hasn't played against consistently tough competition and probably needs to round out his fundamentals due to shorter seasons in the Northern climes.

Except that Riley can actually play defense, so his bat isn't his only carrying tool. I get your point, but I think comparing Naylor to Riley is selling Riley short by quite a bit.

But, Riley can play third base, is athletic, and hitting just as well (I think better) than Naylor at the same age and level. If I was the teaming trading a player and could improve the major league roster, I would not hesitate to trade Riley either.

I want to hold onto Gant... he's got the things you just can't teach... he's going to be a solid anchor in the middle of the rotation.

This would a good trade in 2014. Cashner doesn't throw as hard and he's always struggled with his secondary pitches. I don't think this really improves Miami.

I like him.

But I'd drive him myself to the city for a top 100 bat.

A top 100 OF bat and lower tier projectible pitching prospect would be a solid return, but I doubt anyone trades for Gant though. A contending team would want a vet that has more than 30 innings.

yeah, I don't think we have many pieces left to trade.. some veteran presents (yes I meant that).. and a few good pen pieces. I don't see JT/FF/Viz going at this point. I wonder what JJ will get.. he actually has been pretty good since coming back in June... something like a 2 ERA..

How so? When average pitching is going for a high price and we have one of the best options on the market, and we announce we aren't trading him?

Julio isnt off the market its just gonna take a monster package to land him, and given his team friendly contract thats perfectly fair.

You dont trade him just to trade him, thats stupid. If a team wants to blow Coppy's socks off with a trade, by all means do it.
