Catcher

What's the big objection to just going into 2017 with Flowers penciled into the primary catcher's spot?

I think that is a very viable Plan C if the Yankees insist on being irrational about their demands for Mac, and Castro somehow costs more than 2 WAR player should cost.

Rolling with Flowers and Recker would be much better than giving Ramos 5/70+ or giving Wieters...anything.

I am terrified of the deal Coppy might give Wieters in a desperate attempt to upgrdae the catcher position.

And I really don't want to give up a draft pick for the right to give Ramos market value.

Or that some pitchers get calls others don't. Wonder what javy and Perez would grade out catching Maddux and glavine

in all honesty, I haven't looked at any advanced stats on Recker.. the eye test is all I based my opinion on regarding him. I liked the way he interacts and handles the kids. But I won't argue if he is a bad framer or not. I don't know much about that stat. I might read up on it and see how it works. seems like a very detailed stat.

I wouldn't cry if we kept Flowers and released Recker. Just been a pleasant surprise in this season of not many surprises.

I agree. Ramos is not an option IMO.. never liked Wieters either. I still like the Mac platoon with one of our Righties. That should give us the most bang for our buck.

I agree that Mac should be Plan A, all depending on cost, of course.

I think Mac is currently "worth" his contract, meaning he has almost 0 surplus trade value. Mac straight up for some fungible prospect would be fine. Mac plus $5M gets the Yanks a decent prospect, and Mac plus $10M gets them a real (not elite) prospect. Essentially, this is the Yankees chance to buy a prospect from the Braves, and it will probably be a pitching prospect.

Considering the Braves have plenty of payroll space and nothing of note on the FA market to spend it on, I would prefer they take on as much of Mac's contract as they can while giving up the least amount of prospect value possible.

I suppose keeping Recker on the 40-man could be a way of signaling to the Yankees we have an alternative plan for catcher (Flowers getting most of the games with Recker as his backup) we are comfortable with if they don't drop their price for McCann to something reasonable.

Some view the contract as 2 yrs at $34 million but it's really 3 yrs at $49 million. McCann will likely require the option to be picked up to waive the no trade clause. I would accept $5 million per year for three years from the Yankees and give them someone like Ellis and Morris. If they want more then tell them good luck on finding a taker.

You may be right. Here are the exact details of what makes the option vest:

"Option will vest if he totals 1,000 PAs from 2017-18, catches 90 games in 2018 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2018 season"

He has never caught less than 90 games in a season, though he has failed to reach 1000 PAs in a couple 2-season stretches. Regardless, I think the Braves should count on his option vesting if they do trade for him.
