James McAdoo was a pretty highly thought of recruit until Roy ruined him, no?

How did Roy ruin him?

Because he didnt go pro after his freshman year where he'd be out of the league by now?

Btw, JMM's father has a huge input on him coming back and his HS coach, not just Roy. He does what's best for his players, unlike K who gets a ton of players to return when they shouldnt.

Helps having 4 seniors.

Said it before, experienced talent > unproven freshman any day of the week.

My primary, implied point is that Billy Donovan's name very much belongs amongst that list you posted of premier coaches.

I think the collection of less-regarded players he has graduated to very good careers in the NBA also speaks highly of his abilities.

Oh, i agree, fantastic coach.

That was just off the top of my head.

I wouldnt mind Donovan being the next UNC coach when Roy is gone.

Prefer Shaka Smart though.

How did Roy ruin him? McAdoo would have been a top pick. But since he stayed, Roy has ruined his stock.

UNC recruiting class ranks:

2009 - 3rd

2010 - 4th

2011 - 9th

2012 - 8th

2013 - 13th

So Roy has always had a top 10 class outside of last year.........

I said last 2 years the classes havent been as good.

Paige- 4th ranked PG, 35th overall.
Brice- 11th ranked PF, 50th overall.
JP- 16th ranked SF, 51st overall.
James- 16th ranked C, 73rd overall.

Hicks- 7th ranked PF, 18th overall (rarely plays and is out of position because of lack of depth on the perimeter due to PJ being an idiot)
Meeks- 8th ranked C, 68th overall.
Britt- 20th ranked PG, not even top 100.

Next years class looks nice though.

4 top 100 players is pretty damn good class....a top 10 class. 13 is obviously weaker but still a top 15 class.

BRule Id be interested to see Izzo's recruiting class numbers as well. I can't pull them up right now.

McAdoo would have been a top pick only because the NBA is stupid. He's never been that good, Roy is actually getting more out of him than most would. Giles and BRule look silly claiming he's not a great coach, especially considering what he's done with this team. They are one of the hottest teams in the country an Roy is a big reason why. He's done more coaching (and by that I mean calling timeouts and mixing up his defenses) this year than I can ever remember. He's also developed talent. Paige, Tokoto, and Johnson have all improved as the year as gone on. The man is in the Hall of Fame. How is he not a great coach? Also recruiting rankings are meaningless. I'm amazed people still use them as gospel.

Do you use Scout or ESPN?

ESPN has been better the past few years imo.

Spot on.

I'm more impressed with the defensive schemes he's used at times.

The 1-3-1 zone he threw at Dook was a stroke of genius.

Especially impressive given this isnt one of his most talented teams. They have overachived given the margin for error is so small with all the flaws they have (limited outside shooting, no perimeter depth, awful FT shooting)

Similar to the 06 team.

McAdoo was the 8th ranked recruit in the country coming in, right? I really laughed at Roy getting more out of him.

LOL. That's fine, pile on now.

Cal took Kentucky from rock bottom to elite in about 15 seconds. Elite 8, FF, and National Championship in 4 seasons. Yes, he has absolutely sucked this year, but some of these players were overrated and they just don't know how to play basketball. If they were to stick around another year or two, they'd be elite.. but most of them won't.

Oh well. This year has been disappointing, as was last year. But I'd still take Kentucky's past 5 years (pending the outcome of this season) over just about anyone else's.

Maybe, but that article was spot on

he bought a round of drinks for everyone present after UK lost to WVU in 2010. he wrote pitino's book. he absolutely despises cal. some of his points may be valid, but most aren't - nobody ran off harrow, wiltjer, or archie goodwin. that article is purely personal.

UNC hit the jackpot with Paige. That guy is a monster. Was supposed to be a solid pass-first PG out of high school, and he's pretty much the best 2G in college right now.'

Take him off that team, and they are really rough. But he's good enough to carry them most nights.
