Cervenka Traded to MIA

the league is over paying for relievers now. Wish the braves would ship them all away. Makes holding onto Johnson that much more head scratching

Yeah I am sure teams were just salivating at trading for Johnson. Just look how much he helped the Dodgers last year after traded. Theres no way a team wouldnt offer a quality prospect for that kind of help.

I think we probably held onto Johnson hoping somebody would overpay for him. When the response from the league was, in effect, "well, it's Jim Johnson," we held onto him (for now). It's no biggie.

I really don't understand this trade for the Braves. Why would you trade a major league lefty reliever who has been pretty darn good, one we would have had under our control for the next 6 years, for two C prospects that most likely will never contribute? Baffling.

Because he's a lefty reliever that they plucked from the independent league who has an unsustainable walk rate?

They just got two decent prospects for Hunter Cervenka, so I wouldn't be so sure they don't turn Johnson into something.

Cervenka was due to implode soon.

Have no issues with trading him.

I'm more mad we traded Alvarez than Cervenka.

I wasn't high on Alvarez and loved the return. This is insane. These guys aren't Craig Kimbrel. They were literally picked off the scrap heap and we have a massive amount of high-arm talent in the minors. This is the plan and it's a good one. They did well with us and I'm so glad they did. But being upset is sort of laughable.

I just felt Alvarez had better velocity, and with us it seems he was really starting to pitch under Roger.

It's more assets too. What we need is someone willing to take 6 quarters for a dollar. These guys could be one of those quarters you throw into the trade to get the impact guy u need.

That's what I'm thinking. Neither of these guys are the kind of players we're trying to acquire right now, but Cervenka was living on borrowed time. It'll be good to have a speedy shortstop or pitchable lefty to throw in to a trade though.

Don't mind trading Cervenka. Miami just has such a weak farm, the return was going to be minimal from them. Seymour and Mader seem like marginal prospects. Seymour has a carrying tool, but a tool he can't use unless he can figure out how to get on base. I don't see either as top 30 in our system.

It basically is a trade where we shipped out a guy that has been pretty good for us this year, and could continue to be useful for the next several years at minimal cost, for two prospects that are marginal at best, with the best case scenario of one of them being as useful as Cervenka has been so far this year. No huge deal, trade barely moves the needle, but one that most likely ends up a minor loss for the Braves.

We could keep Cervenka and he isnt likely to be as good as he had been so far this year if you go by ERA. Relievers with 6+ walks per 9 innings dont have long shelf lives.

Perhaps, or he could improve that and remain a useful piece at minimal cost for years. Most likely neither guy we got will amount to what he has already accomplished.

How about we wait to see if he can even maintain his current level of success for the next two MONTHS before we even consider that he could come remotely close to being a "useful piece at minimal cost for years". the guy is pitching the best baseball of his career for the third organization he's been with already despite walking more hitters than Rocker or Wohlers ever did. If that's not smoke and mirrors, I've never seen it.

Why is it so hard to see that guys like Cervenka are a dime a dozen? He's 26 years old already. Whether they ever amount to anything or not, Seymour has 5 years and Mader has 4 years to potentially reach his level of "success".
