Charleston SC shooting

Somehow someone like Breitbart will turn this into POTUS dividing the country with suggestions of gun control and racial divisiveness.

Not meaning to be argumentative - but truly wondering - those of you who speak ill of the church and Christianity, why do you like it when POTUS sings Amazing Grace with it's deep and bold Christian message?

Is it just because he is singing it?

Amazing Grace has sort of been an anthem for the struggle of blacks in America dating back to the days of slavery through civil rights and still used today.

There are conservatives who consider Obama to be a race baiter. There are conservatives who don't consider Obama a black man. There are even black people who are disappointed in Obama and his stance in the black community.

It was a surreal moment to see him lead the chorus in Amazing Grace and to see how energized the audience got.

Personally I see it as a universal message rather than Christian specific.
To my mind that is the intention.

I love to play and sing gospel music and in no way would I characterize myself a practicing Christian

it's a beautiful song

i like Buddha statues and think the call to prayer in Muslim countries is nice too

don't see how any of that correlates to not liking their laws in place from the gov't and the influence they have on gov'ts etc

Of course it was penned by John Newton, a former slave ship captain and a Calvinist. It certainly is profoundly and deeply Christian. It proclaims human depravity and Sovereign grace.

1 Amazing grace how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind but now I see.

2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

3 The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

4 Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

5 When we've been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise
than when we'd first begun.

The service was distinctly, clearly, unapologetically a Christian worship service - for which I am grateful.
