Charlie Morton’s club option

I don’t think I would know how to process JDG signing with us. I associate big name free agents the same way I think of rich people buying a yacht.

Won't be so abstract moving forward....

You just know Degrom finds a way to stay healthy (~25 starts a year and full playoff participant) if he comes to the ATL!

I see no way the Mets let him leave NY. AA won’t get into a bidding war with the Mets. If deGrom wants to pitch here it’s bc he decides to take less and on a better team.

There has been a lot of smoke for several years that DeGrom doesn’t want to live in New York. I wouldn’t find it all surprising if he didn’t sign with the Mets

Isn’t he from Florida and wants to be closer to there? Sounds kind of like the Morton situation.

He’s from Larry Wayne Jones territory

Morton and Jansens salary could be a nice little nugget (Would need to add a bit more as well).

Degrom would pay off so much of the cost of the contract within the first month of signing from all the namesake sales / season ticket demand increase.

If there’s one team the Mets can’t let him leave for it’s the Braves. That would be a media nightmare for them. If they choke the division that’ll give him more incentive to leave. The Dodgers would be a team all in on him with Buhler being down for most of next year.

Not sure how realistic DeGrom would be but if we have a snowballs chance of getting him, i'm declining the option for him. DeGrom, Wright, Soroka, Fried, Strider with Anderson, Elder, Tarnok, Muller as backups is incredible.

Should just tell Charlie to do the Clemens in his 40's schedule. Take a few months off then get some money if we need him to come in.

Braves will definitely get DeGrom, Judge and Turner/Correa. Both Turner and Correa will get in a reverse bidding war as they both lower their contract demands to be the one that gets to play in the great ATL.

Eventually these great vets are going to have to pay the Braves to play for them so they can finally get their rings. I mean when we rattle off 10 straight WS titles, everyone will pay to play for the Braves.

Folks holding out for deGrom may want to realize Scherzer got 3/130 for his age 37-39 seasons after being shut down in the playoffs.

The only way deGrom gets a lower AAV than Scherzer's $43.33M is if he signs for 5+ years. Expect a 3 year deal to cost at least $142M, and a 2 year deal most likely doesn't even get a return phone call from his agent unless it's approaching $100M.

As far as the current rotation mainstays are concerned (2022 xwOBA):

Strider .245 (TOR quality)
Fried .261 (TOR quality)
Wright .304 (#3 quality)
Morton .308 (#3/#4 quality)
Odorizzi .309 (#3/#4 quality)
Anderson .323 (#4 quality)

So that's 6 legit options, but I wouldn't count on anything from Soroka. He needs to stop accruing service time for a while until he proves beyond all doubt he's ready to contribute. I think he's accrued more service time on the DL than he has on the field.

I think the call is to pick up the option on Morton. His beginning of the year was rough coming of the injury but he’s still a TOR arm with extensive playoff experience and can be counted on to go out and pitch every 5 days. I’d rather not pay a lot of money for deGrom not to pitch.

Agreed about Soroka. Everything the Braves have done has said they feel the same way by activating him to option him. I think he’ll be able to compete for a rotation spot next year and might get a shot as a bulk guy in the pen in the playoffs like Wright did last year
