Charlotte a good place to live?

Wife is wondering the winters are too much here and thinking of moving, she said Charlotte or Austin. I told her Austin has all the nasty spiders, scorpions and other critters, but I did say Charlotte MIGHT have fire ants.

Charlotte has nice housing and my degree and programming, I could net a $120k plus job and if she wants she can keep her private company and expand her work or work at a CPA firm. Also it has to have good private schools as well, doesn't matter if it is religious or not, no public schools. They literally suck nowadays.

Is it worth moving after vesting so much time here and have a nice place and 3 acre yard? We will be a long ways away from immediate family but I have a lot of family in Atlanta.

I don't know about 3 acre yard and have never lived in Charlotte, but it's a nice play and I would live there

Welp, Charlotte is pfine. It does have the brown recluse, the termites, the scorpions, the pfriggin' yellow jackets, the afore mentioned pfire ants, a bit of humidity, and a lot of heat. There are some close lakes to cool off in, but then there's also the copperheads, the timber rattlers, and water moccasins. Good luck with the decision.

Of course I'm biased, but it's a great place to live. The climate is nice (though it still is the Southeast). It's conveniently located between Atlanta and Washington, the mountains and the beach. We found it a lot greener than Atlanta was (we've been around here nearly 20 years). There's still sprawl and traffic, but not like other places. You can find acreage within say within a 35-45 minute commute into Uptown and in most every direction. Cost of living is not bad at all. You've got pro-sports, cultural stuff, growing restaurant scene, lakes, parks, etc. A lot of good educational options too. Just depends which area of the metropolitan area you choose. Y'all ought to come down for a tour.

Ha! What's up pfigster?

Not a lot Beds, how's by you and yours? pFor the record I like Charlotte just pfine, but the Aerch did mention pests, I wasn't thinkin' of you, lol.

Well the wife is looking into it. Lot of nice houses that are way cheaper than what mine is worth and get more for your house. I know I won't get that size of yard, but they do have nice yards there.

As for pest, outside of scorpions, we have the same here.

There isn't any place in the South where you aren't going to run into fire ants, IMO. They aren't literally in every square inch of every place, but just look around you if you're down here and you won't have to look long to find a hill or two of them and just like Custer found out when he went to Montana in 1876, if you see one or two there are a few thousand just around the corner.

If you're interested in the South, have you checked out Tulsa? Just curious.

Don't make your decision based on pests. Both places have them and both places have pest control companies as well. Both places are going to have good private schools too.

If I were you I would decide would you rather live in a more hipster college town (Austin) or a more professional city. One thing about Charlotte is that you are close to the southeast coast and the Mountains. Austin has good culture I think, but do you want to live there? Asheville is close to Charlotte with good culture as well.

Well if the wife decides she wants to move there, I will let you know. I am in my upper 40's and I don't know if it is career suicide to change jobs at this juncture, but I want her and my kids happy.

I don't know if my salary demands are too high but my cousin in Atlanta and Birmingham both make over 100k a year and they are in similar career field and I am substantially a better programmer than them and one I always help on the harder issues he encounters working at McKesson.

Have you looked into the Raleigh area? They've got lots of tech jobs there what with research triangle park.

You can get a lot of house for 175-300k. Let me know if you guys get serious about Charlotte and I'll be happy to given you more info.

She was looking at houses, even at 200k, they would be around 400k here in Wisconsin. Very nice houses. She wants to pull the trigger but I told her to think about it first, think hard. I just can't up and move.

I won't move unless my salary demands are met so she doesn't have to work, but the private schools are more expensive there, around what I paid for my eldest going to German schools.

Just messing with you weso, Raleigh's fine. They've got nicer brick walls around their expressways being the capital and all. ;-) But they are farther from a Braves' home game.

Would really love to move up that way. Getting sick of Florida. I just have a sweet job where I am at.

How do you ever get past the fear of moving somehwere else? Ive lived in Florida and this area my whole life, still working at my only place ive ever worked full time at. I feel i am marketable as is my wife, but just always have that feaR ya know
