I am encouraged by the fact taht this time last year CF and 2B were the problem positions where we fans saw no solutions
I wonder if there is a work habits issue.
This is total bullcrap, we never gave him a real shot. Plus Bethancourt's 5 DRS was third in all of MLB and that's not in a lot of innings. AJ's -7 DRS is the worst in MLB.
Actually it is a good move. Bethencourt will never be an MLB catcher of note.
I doubt he could have an Eddie Perez type career let alone a McCann or Javy type career
Pretty obvious
Don't confuse us with the facts. LOL. Look, he's got his detractors and I'm a big supporter. He can and does get lazy. However, I've seen him stop, re-group and find himself (Maybe in Gwinett...). If you really watch, you can see he's gotten better about framing and blocking. The passed balls...concentration.This is total bullcrap, we never gave him a real shot. I actually agree with nsacpi that he's probably a career back-up but I have no tolerance for spin. The way Bethancourt is being treated while AJ goes out there daily stinking even worse defensively while being praised for it is total bullcrap. It was never good for him, esp. being lazy at times, to learn from someone like AJ. Plus when was the last time we actually gave Bethancourt three starts in a row? Call me when that happens a few times..
QFT.
The problem I've had with the situation all along is that I just don't understand how you can tell him "we don't want you to worry about what you do with a bat in your hands", and then play Pierzynski because his bat is hotter. If you want his bat to improve, you've got to give him regular ABs. The same can be said for his concentration and game-calling IMO - pretty tough for him to focus on those things when he's playing once a week AND pressing at the plate because it appears that he's got to hit to get a chance to play more.
He was touted for his defense when young because he has what...an 80 arm back there? The assumption was he could learn the finer points in his progression. Hardly a stretch.
We desperately need prospects for behind the plate.
I'm sure you understand that scouts scout and players have to live up to potential. As someone mentioned before, he's fallen into habits that he did when he first got to AA. That doesn't speak for what he could be IMHO. The old mantra applies: "Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard." I've seen him mope around when a lesser player at the time played in front of him, seen him outright miss 3 balls in a row, but on the other hand I've seen him throw out the best base stealers and shut down a run game in the minors. I don't know what's going on with him, but I do know that a young player, especially a demanding position like catcher has to play. Perhaps this is his wake up call. I still hope he gets it.
Why respond Yeezus? You should know his deal by now.
