Which one do you think would be the most productive major league third baseman in 2015? Discuss and debate.
 
Since becoming a Brave CJ has hit about .296 and given us pretty solid defense. It's still his job. One of those rookies could be used as a utility infielder and broken in slowly.

CJ most likely a 1-2 WAR player. I can't say right now I think that Kubitza or Peraza is that now. I think long term Peraza is. Kubitza I don't love. He's striking out 25% in the minors. THat doesn't bode well for th emajors. He walks well but I don't think he's very good. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
 
I haven't seen Peraza. But from what i've read he is most likely a 2B. Not sure he can play 3B.

I'd also say that it concerns me that he's not a power guy at a power position. However, last series not withstanding, CJ isn't a power guy either. And we have power from other spots.

I also don't think I've seen anything that suggests Peraza is ready next year. You want to bring him up when he's ready.

Why did we extend CJ again.....cost certainty?
 
Peraza doesn't move to third (see lack of power, above). Kubitza has been brought along and has responded; he's having a helluva second half. He needs to finish the year in Gwinnett.

If he continues hitting .340 to .360 (currently at .365) at AA, that doesn't suggest he's anywhere close to ready? lol...

He has a career WAR of 4 over the course of 3.25 seasons worth of play. That is worth 5-6 millions tops. For a team hopeful to win a division, he's not a good option.

Plus, the whole locking him in was dumb as he was going nowhere and was off a career year.
 
He made 5M this year, he would have made close to 8M next year and if we kept him on for his final arb year more than that. Sure we guaranteed him more money, but odds are he would have made more money in arby/FA.
 
CJ is one of those players with a skill set (the high batting average and not much else) that is overpaid by the arbitration process. We had four options:

1) Keep him while going year-by-year through arbitration.
2) Sign him to a deal that gives us cost certainty and let him play out the contract.
3) Go year-by-year through arbitration but trade him before the process runs its course.
4) Sign him to a contract but trade him before the contract runs its course.

In terms of ranking which one of these is best to worst, I would say it goes like this: Option 4, Option 3, Option 2, Option 1.

Really CJ should be moved as soon as Peraza or Kubitza is ready.

My guess is that CJ will still be the best option in 2015. But after that one of the other guys should be ready to take over at third.
 
I agree, I don't see the "extension" for CJ as a big deal. It's low enough that the Braves could definitely move him if Peraza or Kubitza show they're clearly ready. If he can return to be the hitter he was over his first few years, it's far from an absurd price. As nsacpi pointed out, it's probably close to what he'd make in arb., anyway. The cost certainty is beneficial for an org. like the Braves, it's not for a long time, and if he happened to have another season like last year, he'd have cost a lot more. I'm not arguing that it was great or anything, but it's not like it handcuffed the org.

Solid defense? That's a laugh, CJ has a -10 DRS already this year at third. That is quite bad and not solid at all. Further, have you ever seen CJ try to field a bunt? He's one of the worst at it that have become Braves starters at third.

CJ is all average without any real pop or on base skills to speak of. He is also a double play machine if there ever was one (and that goes back to Houston so not just a problem this year).
