College Football Thread

Vols looked good in a win against Utah St last night. While it may seem like a meaningless win, Utah St was bowl eligible last yr while we were not. Also l, many are/were expecting Chuck Keeton to have a huge yr and be a very dark horse Heisman candidate. UT did a great job of keeping him contained. Especially considering how terrible we performed vs dual threat QBs like him last yr.
 
****. Both teams are still relevant.

Nd, is much better offensively now then they were two years ago when they went undefeated into the national championship. Defense may have taken a step back, but a win against michigan on Saturday sets them up for a 10-11 win season

Stomped? I don't think so. I am not saying they are going to win, but it should be a pretty close game. At least these two schools actually play people out of conference. Give credit to both schools for scheduling this game and then a follow up game next season in East Lansing.

Michigan is a hot mess and has been for awhile now. Beating them isn't impressive anymore. They are just a name at this point.
 
Here are some of my thoughts on week one.

Three teams that impressed me the most:

1) Texas A&M - Apparently that offense is just going to keep getting better. Defense looks mediocre, but mediocre is fine with Sumlin's offense.
2) Georgia - Clearly look like the runaway favorite in the SEC East but they may be a bit one dimensional and that might get them in the end. With that said that one dimension is awfully good.
3) Louisville - Too bad they're in the same division as FSU and Clemson otherwise they might be favorites to win the Coastal division in the ACC. How great of a college coach is Petrino? If he wouldn't get in his own way he'd be coaching an elite program right now and competing for national championships year in and year out.

Least impressive teams:
1) South Carolina - They are just not good at all in the secondary and mediocre everywhere else on defense. Could be a long year for the head ball coach. A lot of the guys they recruited to play defense this year didn't make it into school. They're a bit of a mess right now.

2) Miami - Louisville handled them pretty easily. Looks like they won't be good again this year.

3) Vandy - The loss of Franklin really showed. Back to the cellar for the Commodores.

Yeah I expect MSU to beat Oregon and be in control pretty much the entire game. MSU is precisely the type of team that Oregon struggles against. Teams with that play good,fast defense and have strong running games.

MSU jumped out to a half time lead of 24-18, extended it to 27-18, then did the opposite of what you said happen Oregon dropped 28 unanswered points leading to a nearly 20 point victory.

After a big win over MSU Oregon may move up to number 2 in the rankings. Not that Bama did anything wrong, they haven't beaten a highly ranked team as thoroughly as Oregon did.
 
Gotta give it to Oregon. MSU was cruising and a Oregon made adjustments at the half that MSU couldn't counteract.
 
You have probably been hearing the media saying "Alabama has their quarterback". Basically giving the job to Blake Sims. Don't be fooled. There is still one more week of competition. Alabama plays Southern Miss next Saturday before the real season begins when Florida visits Tuscaloosa in two weeks. I fully expect both guys to play against USM and Coach Saban will not make a decision on a "full time starter" until after Saturday's game. And right now, I won't be totally surprised to see a "two QB system" this season.

On another note, been pleased with Lane Kiffin as the OC the first two games.
 
Thoughts on week 2:

The good:

1) Oregon fended off a mighty tough challenge from Michigan St. They wore them out in the end like they do so many teams.

2) Notre Dame - Wow, what an effort from the Irish against what I thought was a good Michigan team. A real contender for a playoff spot.

3) Va Tech - Even though OSU didn't have their QB, it's still impressive that Va Tech went into Columbus and fairly soundly defeated the Buckeyes.

The Bad:

1) The Big Ten - Oh my heavens. They virtually took themselves out of an legit consideration for a playoff spot in week one. Not just losses but near losses versus nobodies. The team with the only real chance going forward is Michigan St, and it's not a great chance. A team might go undefeated from here on out but only because their conference is so terrible this season. Will the committee be naive enough to give that team a spot in the playoffs? No way a Big Ten team will deserve a playoff nod above a 2nd team from the PAC 12 and SEC.

2) UCLA - Two weeks in a row that they haven't looked good. A 42 - 35 win vs Memphis is pretty terrible. Thought they might contend this year for a playoff spot but that looks doubtful.

3) Michigan - They deserve a special mention because of their complete lack of even giving Notre Dame a competitive game. This might be the end for Brady Hoke.
 
The game was closer than the final score indicated. In typical Oregon fashion they ran up the score in the end.

Hands down I can say Oregon is clearly one of the best if not the best team in the country. Absolutely I am upset and disappointed, but they were some tot like 28-2 in their last home games. It's a tough place to play and most of their fans were gracious. There were some idiots, but that's expected.
 
What became of Michigan's WR (only good player on that team) after he went down towards the end of the game? Looked like an ACL or MCL tear to me. They would shut him down for the season?
 
Oregon is the best team in the nation. Florida State is hardly worthy of their ranking, but they are the defending champs.
