James "J.J." Niekro, 23, is a free agent pitcher from Tampa by way of Florida Southern University -- where he played for his brother, former major leaguer Lance Niekro. Both are sons of Joe Niekro, but J.J. was only eight when their dad passed away in 2006.
Lance played his entire MLB career with the Giants, but after his hitting days were done, Lance tried to come back as a knuckleball pitcher in the GCL for the Braves in 2009. He worked in 14 games (four starts) and had one complete game, but only went 1-3,, 9.09, with 17 walks and five wild pitches in 34 innings.
J.J., winner of numerous academic awards while playing at Florida Southern, has worked in eight games, all in relief, and Monday earned his first pro victory.

Just saw where Tanner Roark opted for free agency, seeing that the Braves were calling everyone else up. So stupid to not have him and keep a Tomlin all season.

Roark's stats at Gwinnett: 4-1, 2.14, 3 saves in 24 games. Predict he'll be in a major league clubhouse by Friday.

A little surprised on Roark as well. He probably grades out slightly lower than Santana and Chavez for those who watch these guys daily, so I get the logic (and the fairness in allowing Roark to become a free agent).

It's not earth-shattering, but I think it's an indication that Tomlin is a "Snitker guy" and that's what is keeping him around. Cox had his guys as well (I think every manager does).
