What Fredi did last April to Gearrin was crazy. He pitched him on April 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28. Through most of May he was on a pace to pitch a hundred games.
Btw Gearrin led our pitchers in spring training appearances this year, and tied for the major league lead. It wasn't a crazy number of appearances as a number of other pitchers pitched in the same number of games or one fewer. But considering that he was coming off a season that was cut short by an arm injury maybe it would have been wise to baby him a little this spring. We'll never know. I don't think the spring training usage was crazy, but I do think what happened last April was.
In general I think Fredi is a decent manager with one significant weakness, bullpen management. He will be tested in that department this year with the injuries to the starting pitching. The pen will be used heavily. The key will be Fredi's ability to distribute the innings without damaging the arms we are going to need all year in the pen. I've discussed elsewhere the importance of having a "Sacrificial Lamb" out there in the pen to protect the more valuable arms. That will be more important than ever this year. Also, to save our bullpen arms he's going to have to deviate a bit from always going with the designated guys for particular innings and situations. It will be interesting to see if he rises to the challenge.
One more thought on this year's pen. We have a number of guys who are fairly effective against opposite-handed hitters. That means you can use these guys for a little bit longer outings and also save the rest of the guys in the pen from having to constantly warm up in case they are needed. We have the ingredients in the pen to handle a heavy workload in a balanced way. But the manager needs to have a plan for how to do this.
