Cops are protecting themselves and who can blame them? Social media I guess does the blaming? I mean you aren't the one who actually has to raid these homes. It's easy to grump about it from your couch but at the same time this new social media fad ignores that cops do actually put themselves in harms way. There is some logic behind cops preparing themselves for serious civil unrest. Crowds are illogical creatures. Group think can be a very dangerous thing. I kind of like the idea that police prepare themselves to defend society from illogical hordes.

My brother is a cop. He's a candidate for SWAT right now, actually. There is nothing about my dislike of militarized policing that includes a disregard for the safety of the police. The idea that "safety" is achieved by nighttime raids using flashbangs and military-style weapons is based on a flawed premise. I mean, was this guy worth getting a cop or a civilian hurt? Was it a good idea to go into the house when they didn't know the suspect was home—especially based on the word of an informant? The War on Drugs wan't working without this stuff. It's not going to work with it, either.

Dude, this is not Kandahar. This is Habersham County, GA. You don't think there was another, less confrontational, way to arrest the suspect?

I would post a link to the amount of innocent folks who have had their home raided by the military, er I mean, the cops, but I don't have enough time in the day.

I suspect the reasoning is to catch him in the act and to prevent him from destroying evidence as it makes a stronger case in court. Not saying that makes the situation any better, but I'm sure the police would much prefer significantly less confrontation is such scenarios.
