Craig Kimbrel For Braves Closer In 2019

Braves will have some money but Gausman and O'Day will take up a bit of what would have been available.

I counted O'Day in the $50 million already spent.

An interesting question that hasn't yet been discussed - I wonder if they might consider bringing Venters back since he can likely be signed to a one-year deal on the cheap to be the second lefty. This bumps Biddle to be the third one, and in turn allows you to cut Freeman loose (possibly bringing him back on a minor league deal if he doesn't sign elsewhere).

I think Venters has 1 year of arb left, but i'm not 100 percent sure about that.

Instead of offering 60 million for 4 years to Kimbrel, we should counter offer with 8 years at 7.5 per year. That way Kimbrel can be still be happy to get his 60 million and we get a hometown discount. Guarantees Kimbrel goes into Cooperstown with the A on his hat. And a few World Series trophies.

That works for me.

I just don't think it's worth it for a mid market team, even flush with cash (although it's uncertain how much) to drop that much money on a closer. It doesn't make sense but I wouldn't even be sure it's 50 million available because that number has just gone back and forth a lot.

I'll believe the Braves will spend big this offseason when I see it. Right now it feels too much like Lucy holding the football and telling me to kick it.

I don't think it will be "big" - save for possible extensions - but I don't think adding 2-3 salaries in the $10-$15 million AAV range on short-term deals is really out of the question. If AA gets the chance to add pieces where our obvious holes are on 2 or 3 year deals without giving up prospects, I have a tough time seeing too much downside in doing so. I'd agree with those arguing against Kimbrel if it's going to take 4 years/$60 million to get him to come home, but I'd probably be OK with 3 years/$45 million. If the 4th year is the breaking point for Craig's camp, move on and offer Britton/Familia/Herrera/Soria 2 or 3 year deals. I also wouldn't be surprised if Alex makes a sneaky play for Holland (who would obviously be my preference if the right terms could be worked out) if other teams shy away from him.

If he can sneak in and get those veterans that aren't too old by offering one extra year, I'm not sure there's ever going to be a better time to do it. Would anyone really go overboard if he were able to add Familia and Grandal on 3 year/$30 million deals and bring Markakis back on a 1+1 or bring Brantley/CarGo/McCutchen/Jones in for 3/$45 million?

I dont see us in on Harper or anything, but i think a couple 10-15 APY guys are possible.

Looking at the roster next year, not alot of open roster spots.

C-
1B- Freeman
2B- Ozzie
SS- Swanson
3B- Camargo
LF- Acuna
CF- Ender
RF-

Bench- Culberson, Duval, Flowers, FA bench bat.

Rotation- Gausman, Folty, Newk (although i wont be stunned if he's dealt), Soroka, Teheran with lots of options behind them.

Bullpen- Winkler, O'Day, Viz, Biddle, Venters, Minter.

Looking at this, i see 2 BP guys if we go 4 man bench, 8 man pen. A legit upgrade at C, RF, and BP seem to be the main priorities as well as a RH bat off the bench. Not saying i would pay Kimbrel, but i can see the reason for it.

If Justin Upton was signed for one less year I would try to target a guy like him. Someone that should get you ~3 WAR who makes decent coin so he won't have a huge trade value. Preferably someone with 2-3 years left. Not sure if that guy exists though.

No thanks on brigning Nick Markakis back.

Hasnt been brought up and i think he'll probably be their Freeman but what would Salvador Perez cost?

Signed through his age 29-31 seasons at 11, 14, 14 million. Royals really could use some pitching and really anything, not sure what Salvy would cost in a trade.

Once Markakis is gone you shift Acuna to RF as he is best there anyway IMO.
