Crunching the numbers on a Machado trade - Potential 3B Trades

Would love Machado of course, but agree with others in this thread that it's extremely unlikely since he won't sign an extension. I wouldn't give up any premium prospect unless he would, so a trade ain't happenin

Machado will cost $40 million in surplus value, and the Orioles wants arms.

The Braves are absolutely one of the few teams with the prospects to make this work.

Here's a package that would work:

Mike Soroka OR Luiz Gohara (55 FV prospects) ($22 million surplus value)
Ian Anderson OR Touki Toussaint OR Joey Wentz (50 FV prospects) ($14 million surplus value)
lower level 40 FV prospect ($5 million surplus value)

A package with just Soroka and Gohara could also work theoretically. Kyle Wright would be another guy in that 55 FV range we could trade.

I would be all over this if we don't give up Pache.

Then we could sign Machado long term.

There is absolutely no way I even think about entertaining a trade of this magnitude for a rental. This is the perfect example of a bad trade that will shorten your competitive window considerable. The only way it even kind of works is if you are able to get a guaranteed deal done with Machado beforehand. Besides, we could get some very good 3rd baseman this year for wayyyyyy cheaper.

I will go with Thethe proposal

Folty and a combination of Anderson/Weigel would do it.

Folty is not in the same area code as Newcomb so he is expendable.

Sincerely

Thethe

Thethe would never throw Anderson in there—but maybe Weigel.

MLB trade rumors:

“There’s a growing feeling among talent evaluators” that the Braves will go after Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, according to Cafardo. That may have become even more likely Sunday when the Braves ended their brief Jose Bautista experiment, though they’re bent on giving Johan Camargo a serious look at third base for the time being. Regardless, Moustakas does seem like a strong bet to finish the season outside of Kansas City, which is rebuilding and doesn’t have him under contract beyond this season (there is a $15MM mutual option, however). Moustakas is making a very reasonable salary ($5.5MM) and enjoying a terrific year at the plate, having slashed .294/.333/.528 with 10 long balls in 195 PAs.

Moustakas is obviously a huge upgrade at third, but I’m curious how he would impact lineup construction. He’s a middle of the order guy, but we also have lefties hitting 3, 4 and 6.

He would hit 6th or 7th. Possibly in a platoon with Camargo.

If we got a right-handed hitter like Beltre, he would probably hit fifth, with the catcher sliding down to 7th.

A right-handed third baseman like Beltre does round out our lineup better than a LHH like Moose. But either would be a good addition imo, assuming the price is reasonable.

I think he’d get a Sunday start here and there maybe when Camargo was tired or something. Good pinch hitter vs RH.

I suspect the plan going forward is Camargo until the trade deadline. If the Braves are still in a spot to make an addition they will depending on the play of Johan and maybe Swanson.

Camargo has hit lefties quite a bit better throughout his minor league career. The sample at the major league level is not large but he has a .969 career OPS against lefties. Moose has a career OPS of .683 against lefties. A platoon WOULD make sense with those two.

It would make a lot of sense to add another infield option even if Camargo and Swanson are playing well. Injuries and slumps happen. And as things currently stand, we are an injury away from a Flaherty/Culberson platoon getting a lot of playing time. If we can get one of Beltre/Moustakas/Lowrie at a reasonable price we should.

Reason i'd prefer Beltre is it would split up the lefties.

I'm not sure how you'd hit the lineup in that scenario because you cant hit Nick, Freeman, and Moose in a row.

Why not? It’s fine against RHP, and Camargo’s there to start and PH against LHP.

Beltre was my first choice, too, but his second dl stint of the year (at an age where recurring injury is likelier than not) has downgraded him for me.

Depth is never a bad thing. I've never been opposed to Camargo being our Ben Zobrist.

Can you imagine the numbers Neck and Moose would provide back to back? Both are playing for contracts. Would be awesome.
