culture

Do that to an Appalachian girl and you gotta deal with a pissed off dad

Every where else they would blame it on the boys trauma and rough upbringing

Shame. I thought this was America where you can twerk in front of disabled adults at their day care

First off, wtf is wrong with people. Two, its not illegal to twerk in front of people provided you are wearing clothes. I read in there she touched them briefly including her breast. Thats what will get her convicted. I dont think the Neglect charge sticks unless theres more to this. Saying they got their meds 5 minutes late because they were twerking isnt neglect. The failure to report abuse is kind of wild. Its a crime to not report your crime. 5th amendment rolling over in its grave. the lewd charge OF a disabled or elderly person might only stick because she touched them. Even if brief. That could be interpreted as including them but it says OF not IN FRONT OF. I do have a hot tip for cops though. I hear theres lots of fucking going on in the nursing homes. Also I dont know that twerking meets the criteria for lewd behavior.

a culture that puts SEC championships over Nobel Prizes will wallow in mediocrity

I'm right about this

Vivek was right about it too

Hopefully he doesn't pay too high a price for speaking the truth about it

a significant part of this country does in fact wallow in mediocrity

the fact that it also has some amazing strengths and extraordinary techological hubs obscures this truth

if not for the spillovers from those hubs many parts of this country would be like Mexico

Vivek isnt wrong but my question is how would we accomplish what he says we need. He is lamenting the free market and freedom.

I think culture changes but is not that amenable to policy. It is what it is. The children of immigrants in this country do exceptionally well in part they are muti-cultural. Immigrants and their children can see for themselves which parts of American culture should be valued and which parts are best rejected. There is also quite a bit of research showing that being bilingual confers certain cognitive advantages. In diverse workplaces, there are also advantages from possessing certain intercultural competencies, such as understanding how communication styles can vary across groups. There are ways of developing intercultural competencies without being an immigrant or child of an immigrant, but it takes effort. Effort that a lot of people aren't willing to put in. Instead, you often get this chest-beating about American cultural superiority and the need for immigrants to assimilate. Good luck with that. Enjoy those SEC championships while our children get the scholarships and earn the bigger incomes.
