DOB: Braves close to signing Wandy Rodriguez

It hopefully accomplishes the same thing signing Freddy Garcia And Harang did. We have had a lot of luck with washed up starters lately. There is no risk in this signing.

This is why I don't really have an opinion on the deal. There is no risk at all. I just don't think Wandy has anything left. But, the Braves are great at identifying talent in places where most organizations cannot.

Personally, I like this type of no risk move better than giving 5-8 million to a Harang type. This way Hale and Man-Ban should both actually get a shot, if we'd signed someone like Harang then you know he'd have a spot in the rotation.

I would like to know what flunked him with Phillies that Braves found acceptable or that got well in two weeks

Well, according to Bowman this deal is still pending a physical too. He apparently failed his previous one two weeks ago, which would've been about a week after his last start in Winter ball (20 Dec. was his last start). The Braves reportedly decided to sign him due to liking what they saw in those starts. But his failed physical came more recently so that doesn't really answer your question. Maybe we'll find out soon or after his physical with us.

It is also possible that Philly signing Harang led to them being more strict about Wandy's medicals and thereby the failed physical. It may be that once Harang agreed to terms that they decided not to take a chance on Wandy.

Wandy got pulled tonight pitching for Aguilas after 2.1 innings. All told he was charged with three hits against, one earned run, two walks and he had one strikeout. He left in the third after a hit and two walks loaded the bases. His replacement got out of the jam without any runs being scored.
