DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Speaking of abortions with the bat (and backup catchers), saw today where Henry Blanco signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks. 42 years young and still kickin' it. He played for Atlanta in 2002 and 2003.

I really like the Gamel signing. He's never got more than 128 at bats in the majors which was his first time facing major league pitchers and he wasnt terrible in those at bats. You never know with these kind of guys, Chris Davis was a scrub before this year and then he goes nuts.

As the les francais are fond of saying, a chacun son gout.

People who can't speak French are far more fond of saying it than the French.

Speaking of: it's one of the main vocal themes of Die Fledermaus (which I just saw earlier this week)—and that opera is rotten with jokes about how the Viennese don't know / can't speak French.

Best to just stick with de gustibus non est disputandum.

Actually like it so far.

Gamel can rake, only problem, a big one is health.

Floyd if signed is good, when healthy.

Neither are for huge money.

Offseason is over?

Gamel can rake? - .229 .305 .367 .671 - Get that man some leaves.

Floyd is a decent move for depth. Fine with it as long as Wren doesn't sign him to some ridiculous contract.

Exactly RE: cost ... Although I find out curious that this deal has been progressing at such a deliberate pace - maybe the Braves are bluffing the Cubs, or better yet ... the Rays.

Braves signed 1B Mark Hamilton to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training. The 29-year-old spent this past season in the Red Sox organization, batting .265/.365/.458 while playing mostly with Triple-A Pawtucket. He'll represent organizational depth for the Braves.

When you have ownership that isn't willing to spend with inflation these are the types of moves that Wren has to make. He has to save all of his money to potentially keep this core together. Not sure why anyone is surprised.

I hear all of this about no money to spend, my question what has happened to the supposed extra 25 million dollars every team is getting from the new television deal. Also the Braves are getting a little extra from their local tv contract and they have McCann's and Hudson's money come off the books, and with arbitration raises they still should have about 10 million dollars to spend. So why are they scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I feel like his career has been one long disappointment after Star Wars.

While I think these under the radar moves are good ones and important for depth, I too wonder where is all this extra money that we are supposed to have? Many teams are already spending it as we've already seen free agent prices going through the roof. Maybe we have a move or moves that just haven't happened yet.

I wish I knew. Liberty media just doesn't want to commit more than 100M to this team regardless of the revenues. its really sad. Hopefully they open up the checkbook to keep the core when we go into the new stadium.

There should be at least one more move. Lefty for the pen. Looks like EOF is the leading candidate at this point.

Also in one of his recent interviews, Wren said that once the team took care of filling its basic needs, he would have a window to do something "creative."

Assuming we sign Floyd and EOF we'll be at about $90M for projected payroll.

Would it be safe to assume that the Gamel and Hamilton signings, Gamel especially, probably mean Chavez isn't coming here? I'm guessing we were hoping for Chavez, but these two guys were options A and B in case that didn't happen.

Gamel and Hamilton are on minor league deals. They are lottery tickets. I don't think we can read anything into those signings in terms of implications for signing Chavez.
