DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Just give the man a raise

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are targeting Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell to be their pitching coach.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman first raised the possibility of the Phils going after McDowell. The Braves have asked McDowell back, but he's not under contract and seems likely to interview with the Phillies before making a decision.

Dodgers didn't pick up Mark Ellis' option, making him a free agent. Doesn't he make sense as a one year 2b? Assuming we're serious about moving Uggla, of course.

Wouldn't mind having him on the bench. Good defense. Great teammate. No thanks on having him start, though.

Ellis would be perfect to have on the bench if La Stella takes over second. Could really help him along and spell him against tough lefties.

Don't think I'd ever say that Leo was a product of the talent he worked with...

"In his book The Baseball Economist, J.C. Bradbury titles a chapter, "How Good is Leo Mazzone?" Using statistical analysis, he analyzes whether Mazzone had a significant impact upon the pitchers that he coached. The sample is all pitchers who have pitched at least one year under Mazzone and one year under a different pitching coach. Bradbury found that Mazzone lowered the ERA of pitchers by an average of 0.64 points, and that after leaving Mazzone, pitchers' ERA increased by an average of 0.78 points. Bradbury believes that such an impact is deserving of Hall of Fame consideration."

(From Leo's Wikipedia page.)

Leo was good, but I never totally bought into Bradbury's argument (and Bradbury is also very good).

wow that's ludicrious, pay him what the other guys would.

Do you think it's just about the money? Realistically, we're only talking a couple 100K here. If McDowell is seriously considering jumping ship there has to be more to the equation.

That being said, I don't think he leaves.

Yeah that's pretty ridiculous. There's no reason McDowell shouldn't be paid as one of the top 5 pitching coaches in baseball because he's definitely one of the best. He's done wonders with every pitcher he's ever coached.

Except Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens.

Pay the man. This is an easy solution

Just a couple 100k? Not sure about you, but I work for money. That money provides for my family. And I will do what I love for the highest bidder to help my family more.

Roger?!

I meant that a couple 100K shouldn't be that much for the Braves to cough up.

But seriously, glad to know you work for money.

Dodgers expected to offer a major package for Price and offer a huge posting fee for Kamakaze Tanaka .

Makes it pretty easy to root against those guys.

By the way, the Roger Mac stuff should probably have it's own thread .

Hanson was fantastic before his shoulder injury and jurrjens was a very solid pitcher before his knee issues.

The thing with Hanson is that his mechanics told us that he would have shoulder problems, and I'm not sure how much was done to change his mechanics up to save his shoulder.

Either way, no pitching coach is 100% effective in pitcher development. I'll gladly admit I was wrong about Roger, who I was very down on after his first couple of years on the job after Mazzone.

Thing is, we just lost Dave Wallace to Baltimore. We cannot afford to lose Roger.

DOB said the Phillies former pitching coach could replace McDowell if he goes there.

If we end up losing McDowell to a division rival over a sum of money that's not enough to afford a minimum-salary player, that would speak really, really poorly of the organization, its finances and its priorities.

Lol who do the Dodgers have that would possibly appeal to the Rays, other than Puig, whom they aren't trading.

Pipe dream.

I don't know the Dodgers could be an interesting case study. If LA offered Matt Kemp with his contract paid the Rays have to at least listen right?
