DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Every single professional player comes into the league feeling that they are a $100M man. The elite ones see it happening sooner. Thats all.
People here are so divided it is hard to get a consensus on anything but just as a refresher: 1b is the easiest position to replace currently. Heyward is extremely athletic and talented but he HAS NOT harnessed that talent to date. Kimbrel is the best closer to come along in a while considering his age and all else, it is just unfortunate that baseball has chosen this time to devalue closers or so it seems. The 3 most ofter mentioned along Kimbrel are Papelbon, Rivera and SOriano. None of their teams even made the playoffs this year. What does that portend to GMs other than there are better ways to spend the money.

We currently have nobody to come close to replacing what Freeman does and Heyward has been a 5 WAR player when on the field. While that not be close to his ceiling it's still very good and and one of our better players.

Never thought we'd keep Kimbrel, cant pay a closer that much, period.

Still time with Freeman but doesnt look good.

Heyward is probably as good as gone though.

My only question is, who replaces him as closer? Do we have anyone internally that fits the mold?

In my hypothetical, it would of been early this offseason and sign a veteran like Balfour/Mujica/Benoit to replace him.

Maybe Graham or Simmons longterm, Walden internally.

Off the top of my head Avilan would be the logical favorite to close. Walden certainly would get looks. Carpenter should be able to do it in a 3 run situation, just dont let him throw a curve.

Someone wonders why Kimbrel wasnt traded early in the off season: No way to gauge return until arb figures. At best it wouldnt be a great deal but if he wins his case return will be less.

I personally think Heyward is gone very soon. Just the Braves way of doing things. Might could get a good return from a team like the BoSox or even the CUbs if they get Tanaka.

Freddie I think stays at least thru this year and probably next as well. But if he or his agent has indicated that he wants to go West, Seattle would be a good starting point and maybe even the Angels.

My predictions: Heyward stays and plays for the Braves in 2014 and 2015, Freddie stays and plays for the Braves in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Kimbrel stays and plays in 2014 and 2015 but is traded before his last arb season in 2016.

The only arb case that is somewhat problematic is Kimbrel's. The other two are within the range that the team would have been projecting.

I more or less agree with @nscapi here, although it wouldn't surprise me to see 2/3 or all eventually extended.

I don't think Kimbrel will stay aBrave long term. It's sad that he'll likely be gone, but our budget allows us basically 3 or 4 high paid players. Jason, Freddie, Simmons, Justin, Minor, Medlen, and Julio are all more valuable.

Believe it or not, there are other things that are going to impact on extensions and arb awards like Kimbrels should he win (doubtful IMO). We all know about the terrible TV deal compared to big payroll teams. IMO a bigger issue short term is the status of Turner Field. Will the city of Atlanta cut funding for something they have announced will be torn down. If maintenance is allowed to go down will attendance also fall? I think it could. And who knows just how much the FO cares now that the new stadium has to be paid for.

That 300K obstacle is a red flag to me. As such I think Heyward goes sooner rather than later. Kimbrel may be playing for another team come opening day. Freddie will be a Brave thru 15 unless someone makes a huge offer. JMHO

I highly, highly doubt any of the three will be traded until at least next offseason, if then. We are too good, built to win now, to deal any of the these three who are three of the best on the team.

We aren't winning anything with this roster though. Sure we are in win now mode during the regular season.
