DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Arent Davis and Delmon Young both RH hitters. If Wren does sign another 4th OF, and I feel he will, Im pretty sure he will be a LH hitter with corner OF pop.

My guess is it will be a lefty too. Eric Chavez would be my choice.

Our bench would be Laird, Chavez, Schafer, plus two out of Pena, Pastornicky, La Stella, Terdoslavich, Cunningham, Constanza.

Chavez doesn't play the OF and what has Schafer proven? If that is our bench then FW would have been better off keeping Reed Johnson. I'm fine with adding Chavez but we need a legit 4th OF. Also, I think if the price is the same I'd be much more inclined to adding Michael Young instead of Chavez as Young can play multiple positions. A lot also depends on if they feel Terdo can handle the glove which is my biggest worry with Terdo. Cunningham and Constanza should never be mentioned as legit bench options. Honestly I hope Pena can prove that last year wasn't a fluke but I'm not sold on him at the plate and even though he switch hits he's not much of a threat from the left side.

Lot of truth in that statement, yes. Josh Johnson just seems to have more of a gamble with him. If the Braves were interested, I don't know if I'd do more than a one year deal with an option for a second. Now if Johnson is healthy, then someone is going to get one heck of a pitcher. With that possibility, I could see Atlanta being interested. But, it is a gamble.

Johnson, Santanna, Halladay, Hudson (with less upside) etc.. All pitchers with considerable "gamble" to them. Anderson from Oaktown hasn't pitched to his talent level yet, so he hits the market also (I think I read that, not 100%). It is all a gamble. IMO we need a TOR candidate for the postseason that can dominate. I would much rather throw a healthy JJ against Kershaw that JT, or AW, or BB. Then I think the matchups would even out going forward.

I have a different view about the relative merits of Cunningham and Constanza vis a vis Reed Johnson. Apparently, the club does as well.

People keep plugging Johnson but has anyone actually seen him pitch with Toronto? I know Halladay is done as his last start he was topping out at 83 MPH and who knows what Santana can do? The one thing about Santana though is that even when he lost his velocity he was still dominant so if he's throwing 89-90 MPH I think he could still put up some decent numbers.

It's been awhile since I posted, but I was thinking about infield bench. What about Furcal off the bench? He could play all 3 positions in the field and help us with our running game. Plus if something happened to Simmons, he could slot in pretty easily.

I agree with Wren's decision to not pick up Reed Johnson's option. Johnson is pretty much a corner OF who is a decent bat off the bench, but nothing special. Of course, most bench players aren't anything special. I'm curious to see how the bench is assembled, but there are always a lot of guys who can be plugged in floating around out there. But please, no Delmon Young.

Furcal burned his bridges with Atlanta when he spurned us a couple of years ago. Kelly Johnson is a guy that is cheap and can play 3B,2B, and 1B.

I think we'll get a veteran left-handed bat like KJ or Eric Chavez. KJ is more versatile positionally. Chavez the better hitter. Chavez would be my preferred option.

I think KJ will cost more than we want to pay and he will be in decent demand. Chavez isn't as versatile, his bat is better of course. I think we have seen the Braves are trying to utilize players that can play multiple positions. As for the bridges being burned, it's a business and people get over stuff, so I don't think it would be that big a deal. I think the issues would be more with the agent than the player himself. Furcal switch hitting, could play 2nd, 3rd and SS, plus the speed off the bench(not what he was of course). I just think that between him, Pena and Lastella we would be covered in the infield pretty well. I don't expect it to happen, but I think it would be something to look at.

He had surgery at the end of the year to clean up something. The point is, to get a TOR type arm we have to gamble just a bit. No option will be perfect that won't cost us 25 mill or a boat load of picks. You have to roll the dice and hope you catch lightening.

He may cost more than we're willing to pay, but I don't know what the demand for him will be. I have never been that enamored with Johnson, but he'd be a nice fit for us given his versatility and the fact he's a LHH.

Edit: He made just under $2.5 million in 2013 and I don't see him getting much more than that on the open market.

I don't disagree that he would be a good fit. With his age and talent, I think he will get atleast a 2 year deal from someone and I wouldn't be shocked to see him get around 3m a year. If he is in for a 1 yr w/option then I could see us in for his services, but I don't see us committing more than that for him.

I doubt he gets a two-year deal from anyone. I see him as a year-to-year guy at this point in his career. I thought last off-season was very telling for him in terms of his marketability.

I personally wouldn't sign him for more than 1 year, but this is his last chance at a multi-year deal, even as a super-sub. I just don't get the feeling that he will end up with the Braves.

KJ should go for about 2M and Chavez for 3-4M. I don't see them getting more than a one year deal, maybe plus an option year.

And that's entirely possible. The Braves don't seem to bring guys back for some reason. I just doubt he gets a multi-year deal. He had a nice season for the Rays, but as soon as they acquired DeJesus, Johnson seemed to have his own personal spot on the bench.
