DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

I remember the day of the trade and the reactions to it. Nobody was against it, in fact most everyone thought we ripped the Marlins pretty bad. It's a shame it didn't work out but it was a good trade/signing at the time.

Busy indeed:

Braves signed RHP Ryan Kelly to a minor league contract.
Kelly posted a rough 4.68 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 67 1/3 innings this past summer between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. It's merely a depth signing for the Braves. Source: Matt Eddy on Twitter Dec 2 - 11:56 AM

Agreed, although I DO remember more than a few questioning the extension. I wasn't one of them; I thought it was great (and I was way wrong). But I do remember more than a few raising well-argued objections to the price and years in the extension before a single game as a Brave had been played.

Deadline for decisions about making a tendering offer for arb eligible players is tonight. I suspect Janish and Martinez will be non-tendered.

Well DOB seemed to think Colon might be an option but with the contract Kazmir just got I would suspect Colon wanted more so the A's moved on.

Doubt the Braves go with Colon.

Well, if you are looking for someone who could contribute to the rotation on a short term deal that might actually be an upgrade, he fits the bill.

Janish, Martinez and Elliot Johnson non-tendered.

Pena signed to a one-year contract.

I'm bullish on Pena. He's going to get a lot of playing time in 2014.

I'm not happy that Martinez is cut if he was healthy. Guy was severely underrated in the pen for us. But if his injury is a concern than what can you do? Glad no EJ or Janish. WOOOOOOOO

Martinez had shoulder surgery. In August I believe. It is harder to project how quickly and how well a pitcher will come back from that compared to elbow surgery. Maybe we can keep him on a minor league deal.

We now have 3 spots open on the 40-man roster. Wonder if we'll take someone in the Rule 5 draft. We have tended not to.

True. Hopefully we bring him back ona minor league deal. Cannot have enough quality BP depth.

Glad they kept Pena, was very good.

Janish/EJ, no big deal.

Agree with Zito that if CMart is healthy, dumb to non-tender him.

Regards to Colon, for the right price, he'd be a good fit on a 1-yr deal.

losing C-mart is not a big deal people. We need 7th/8th & Loogy for the pen. Not a swing reliever.

We need depth, Martinez is that. And Martinez had a very solid FIP and xFIP for his career both around 3.5. We certainly could use that plus the ability to go multiple innings in ou pen.

SIERA indicates he should be even better than that. But anyway if he's a mid 3-4 ERA pitcher who eats innings he's arguably the best longman in baseball. If our BP was

Kimbrel
Walden
Venters
Carpenter
Avilan
Vet
Martinez

There isn't a better BP in baseball.

That said who knows if Martinez is healthy or not. And there's a cost risk. If he is healthy we need to bring him back.

Are the three non-tenders what O'Brien meant by "busy"?

Damn straight that's busy! Braves were working on those cuts for a whole month and were forced to put them in effect early to steal the headlines away from us losing our top 2 FA to the Yankees and Giants.

There's a good chance we can just re-sign Cmart. That's not uncommon to do to a player coming back from an injury.

Wouldn't put Venters on that list yet. He won't be ready when the season starts. And you also left Varvaro & Gearrin off the list. The braves will have plenty of depth but non-tendering C-Mart is not a bad thing. He would have gotten close to 1 mill in arby and now they might get him back for 1/2 that.

But like I said a 8th inning guy is way more important right now. Walden won't make it all year.
