Draining the Swamp

The 64-year-old veteran oil executive has no government or diplomatic experience. The pick would put to rest weeks-long speculation of who would earn the post as the U.S.'s top diplomat. Tillerson would be fourth in line to the presidency.

One of ExxonMobil's and Russia's biggest deals fell victim to the sanctions imposed by the Obama administration in reaction to Russia invading Crimea in 2014. That deal would have reportedly been worth $500 billion.

anyone who believes he drained the swamp is the dumbest of the dumb

loved hearing people say Hillary shouldn't be president cause of ties to Goldman Sachs and then see how this has unfolded

It’s official: Trump announces Goldman Sachs President/COO Gary Cohn as director of his National Economic Council.

yeah, but he never gave a speech

Corey Lewandowski starting a lobbying firm

“I can promise you I will not be a registered lobbyist,” Lewandowski said. “Yeah, I can promise you I will not be a swamp creature.”
says a guy who has Trump and all his inner team on speed dial.

I just wonder IF Repubs will ever call Trump to task for the stuff we all know he's going to do. Most wouldn't ever call W to task for his and Trump is way more scary as far as getting on his bad side. I hope Trump will be a great president, we all are better off if he is, but sadly I think he'll wind up like Skynet in the Terminator movies, he was chosen because of the fear and loathing of the alternative and that "he'll take care of US" but once he gets in power for real the horns will start to show up. Hopefully I"m wrong, I really wouldn't mind that at all.

How can you argue Tillerson has no diplomatic experience?

He has experience working with foreign businesses and governments on deals for a private company. That's quite a bit different than what would be considered entirely state matters. He was never representing the United States in his business deals. He was representing a multi-national corporation with the goal of making more money for itself. That could conceivably apply in some instances in his work as Secretary of State, but his new universe is going to be much broader. Diplomacy does not operate like a private corporation. My guess is he will surround himself with some top-notch diplomats (hopefully not anyone like John Bolton), but, to reiterate, Tillerson has limited diplomatic experience and that is using the broadest definition of diplomacy.

Not defending Trump or Tillerson, but I'm not sure foreign affairs aren't actually GovCo. When we get a president that isn't intertwined with Goldman-Sachs I might change my mind. My suspicion is that it is all mega-corporations despite the facade of nation-states.

Is that not more diplomatic experience than HRC or John Kerry when they were appointed? Not many people have secretary of state experience.

Don't care for HRC, but at least Kerry was Chairman of the Foreign Relations committee. He'd also been in war before.

Sure... but I'd say Tillerson's experience dealing with foreign entities surpasses just about every SoS we've ever had. You may not like the nomination - and that's fine - but complaining about a lack of experience is ridiculous
