Easter game thread vs Phillies

Not gonna win many series when the top 4 guys only get 3 hits. Expect that will change.

I blame smyly. Acuna, albies, FF, and ozuna hit great till he got here. Freaking AA wrecked this team by signing him. 3 games is enough.... our run is over, and it's on smyly!

Because we are broke and he was unnecessary.

Disagree. The rotation was trash last year. Every team uses mire than 5 starters. Wilson, Wright et al can’t be counted on.

If we sign smyly for 7 million then we keep Duvall maybe? Is that the impact?

Who do we sign for the 11 million?

I think we need a team to be willing to deal their 3b for a reasonable deal. No evidence that such a deal was an option.

I don’t get the smyly hate. Perfectly good play for a team looking for upside. Probably paid a couple million extra to get him locked up early. So what?

The thing I asked about all year was being a bat short. If cf and 3b can’t hit then that’s a problem. I don’t see why smyly stopped that from happening.

I mean we should at least give Smyly a start before we start crushing him.

If the Braves have no money then the Smyly signing absolutely stopped that
I don’t believe we have no money.

Aa has said he keeps money for the deadline every year.

I doubt the all star game was put into the budget

Even if it was, it seems likely we will have more fan attendance than was projected in the budget.

Would I rather have someone like JBJ on this team instead of Smyly? Tough call, but from the moment he was signed I wrote about being worried the Braves would be a bat short. I think I’d prefer JBJ in place of Pache, and Wilson in the rotation in place of Smyly.

Of course, that’s easy to say now that everyone made it through ST healthy, and Soroka looks like he will come back strong. An injury to a rotation piece in ST would have made every single person on this board ecstatic to have Smyly on board.

The Braves decided to roll the dice on having both Riley and Pache in the lineup over rolling the dice on having Wilson and Wright in the rotation. I can’t say I blame them too much for making the choice they did.

Reasonable take.

Exactly. Plus you can’t get jbj for 11 million at the beginning of the offseason.

I’d bet if jbj said 1 year for 12 at the start of the season he’s a brave.

Dirty words but the Braves may feel like waters is a legit offensive upgrade if needed this year.

Also very possible that guys that were not available at the start of the year are available at the deadline

Will smith is the questionable signing IMO for cash this year, not smyly. Can’t fault aa for ender. And smith is at an ok number.

Riley and Pache have the 2nd and 4th highest OPS among the starters. Maybe a bit early to be drawing any conclusions.

Braves signed smyly before Morton, right? Shouldn't the conversation then be Morton or an offensive piece?

I'm highly skeptical that JBJ will end up being an upgrade offensively over Pache. And like Ender, he's at or at least near the point where defense first guys start falling off a cliff. For one year that wouldn't kill us, of course. All else being equal, if we're going with a guy who's likely to put up a sub-100 wRC+ while playing good defense, I'd rather use the one who could use the year of experience to get better for future years.

Of course you can make that same argument for the fifth spot in the rotation as well for Smyly vs. Wilson, but I think Drew's upside is higher than JBJ's.
