“At what level are we really just living in excess,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “and what kind of society do we want to live in?”

The Late Show audience cheered wildly with approval.

California Gov. Jerry Brown took office in 2011 with a $27 billion deficit.

He won voter support for huge tax hikes on the rich in 2012,

and voters reauthorized them in 2016. Brown leaves office

w/a $6.1 billion surplus.

Take a note: Taxing the rich works.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc. Brown also took office when the economy was bad and rode the wave of an economic recovery.

always a qualifier --- Obama had to succeed because things were so bad they could only going to go up
was a disingenuous argument then as now.
when pointed out in Feb 2017 that Trump inherited a wave --- not so much

Feb 2017 he was in office what -- 3 weeks ?

And who sat in the Governors chair 3 of the 4 times before Brown ?
The fact he inherited a **** show and walked away with these numbers ...
and taxing "dems dat gots" didnt impede that progress in any way

Since 1980, the bottom half of the income distribution has had 0 growth.

For the top 0.001%, income has grown more than 600%.

70% top marginal tax rates, a la @AOC, can change that.

Emmanuel Saez and I make the case in today's NYT.

First it will be a billion.

Then 500 million.

Then 100 million.

Then 5 million.

It will never stop because there isn't enough money to pay for these communist programs.

they probably wont stop until even the people monitoring air traffic are expected to work for free

... oh ....

It doesn't do anything. Can youake an argument based on data?? I'd really like you to try.

Is it your goal to make everyone's lives better, or is your goal to make everyone's lives more equal?

Bc it sure seems to me you and Julio just want to make rich people poorer

Are we measuring the political climate based on the audience of a late night talk show that has been primed to applaud everything the guest says?

Even Cortez's own party isn't on board with her brand of socialism.

we tried a reality TV star that hired his audience and that isn't working out too well.
Might as well try real -live studio audiences

as to your second point --- we are having - (D) and (R) are having conversations we haven't had since the 1950's
so yeah, not only her party but the opposition as well

"her brand of socialism " ????
would you care to explain that

Budget deficit on track to rise by $200 billion in FY 2019 after rising by over $100 billion in FY 2018.

Anyone can gin up the economy (especially when it was doing pretty well anyhow) by blowing a $300 billion hole in federal finances.

Good luck to whoever is hired to clean up the mess.

If revenues increased then how is it solely the fault of the tax cuts that we have an exploding budget ?

The tax base grows every year (due to inflation, population growth, productivity growth) except during recessions. So revenues will grow even when the tax rate is cut.

And due to wage growth and new jobs....Why are those things happening at accelerated rates?

Every apocalypse prediction regarding this administration ends up being terribly wrong. Will be interesting to see when/if China blinks. The world is catching on that they are a bad actor but they needed a leader and that was absent from the United States for 30+ years.

China wins if a new Democratic president leaves the trade dispute up to those guys instead of the President. Xi would love that.

Very fitting because ever since Clinton China money has flown through the coffers of the Democrats.
