Economics Thread

Is it ?

That seems to be the logic behind opening up... to get / keep the economy rolling.
Right?

Now 2 vpeople have panned Slavit's point, but no one has shown another explanation.
From day one the opposition to closing down was the economy would tamk

The argument being made was our lack of sufficient healthcare forced us to shut down the economy resulting in it shrinking by a third. That's terrible logic as even the countries with "model" healthcare systems had to shut down and torch the economy.

The massive economic downturn this person is pointing to had nothing to do with the state of healthcare in the US. Nowhere in the world is pandemic proof.

Lets play an economic trivia game. Put the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 in order starting with the year with the most jobs added and ending with the year with the least amount of jobs added.

No takers. Well let me spoil the results

The order goes....

2014

2015

2016

2018

2017

2019

You have to go back to 2013 to find a year where even in Trump's best year he added more jobs than an Obama year. Obama even eclipsed 3 million jobs added one year. Trump has yet to do that once. But you would all know this if it wasnt for the fake news media like Hannity and Fox News. As of right now Trump is at a net negative in job growth. You can say the virus isnt Trumps fault but no one on the right gave Obama any slack for the 2008 Bush economic collapse. After that he added 16 million jobs.

Lets have a look at economic Jesus term.

7.8 million jobs lost since his inauguration.

11% unemployment, the highest since WW2

Economy shrank 5% in first quarter of 2020 and 10% in quarter 2

Trade defecit up 15.%

7100 coal jobs lost, 274,000 manufacturing jobs lost

Corporate profits down 6%

When did it reach zero? The workforce adds almost a million people per year. Trump could have added 2.5 million jobs in his first 3 years and it wouldnt have lowered the unemployment rate.

Heres a fun fact for you, running trillion dollar deficits is a good way to inflate the economy and job growth in the short term.

I agree. But comparing job growth on unemployment of 8% against unemployment of 4% is not a valid comparison.

I get you hate Trump but why slurp Obama? He didn't legalize your drug either

What do you have against facts? I seem to recall that was your response when I pointed out an intellectually dishonest post by Candace Owens. I will grant you that its easier to add jobs the higher the unemployment but the difference is Obama's term was/is finished. He added 11.6 million jobs and took us from 10% unemployment to under 5% unemployment. Thats where he finished. Assuming Trumps term ends in January he needs to add 8 million jobs just to get to zero. Heres another fun fact, illegal aliens in the country went down under Obama.

Why do I post this? I post to counter the fake news narrative knowing it grinds the gears of those people. I have never been shy about criticizing any politician, you only take issue when I do it to one politician though.

Clinton took the unemployment rate down

Bush took it up

Obama took it down

very poorly chosen one took it up

this is the kind of simpleton reasoning that appeals to certain posters around here...except when it yields conclusions they don't like...then they go all sophisticated and nuanced on us

well atleast someone gets it. You dont win elections by being the smartest or the having the best policy. You win elections by appealing to the stupid vote. They are the easily influenced. There are very smart people on all sides. They are the vast minority. Elections arent won by swaying the smart people.

George Wallace, whatever you may think of him, was a political genius. He liked to say "make it so low even the cows will get it." Wise words for a politician.
