Economics Thread

Well - 3 regular 'free trade' absolutists entered the thread this morning to see real concessions given and the 3 didn't bother to respond.

Its been real guys!

Sorry its difficult to see long term strategy because you've been fooled into thinking your economic worldview is the only one.

WHAT CONCESSIONS!!!!

Lol. I tried to read the article but it's pay walled.

Mexico to "review" China tarrifs?

This sounds a lot like "we commit to thinking about doing less trade from China in the future"

It's easy to claim victory when you will literally call anything a victory... like the first round of delays bc Canada announced they will do something they already announced they would do

I'm aware you have to double down becuase you are hilariously wrong on this topic. Its ok - You're going down the BL route for sure on this one.

WHAT CONCESSIONS!?!?!?! A NICE PHONE CALL?!?!?!

Chinese companies have shifted production to Mexico and routed shipments through the nation since Trump hit the Asian country with tariffs back in his first term. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said Mexico has proposed matching Washington’s tariffs on China and urged Canada to do the same.

“I think it would be a nice gesture if the Canadians did it also, so in a way we could have ‘Fortress North America’ from the flood of Chinese imports,” he said.

Who has told you guys repeatedly this is hte plan?

Its shocking you can't see it.

Speaking at a briefing on Thursday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said “certain countries are wielding the tariff stick, disrupting the international trade order and affecting the stability of the global industrial and supply chains.” Beijing would “make all efforts” to support foreign trade in these circumstances, he said.

Good old 'free trade' absolutists directly on the CCP's side though for sure.

I love how many of you take the leftist position on Trump "He's a crazy madman who is just doing random things - Why does he say the ridiculous things he says".

Maybe, just maybe, he is smarter than all of you.

While that’s really nice we got a commitment for Mexico to review, I don’t see why this concessions is worth risking an American economy recession (or deepen the recession we are currently in depending on your opinion of the current state of things).

I don't know how many times I have to tell you the same thing over and over again, but here goes again

If Trump believes Tarrifs are a means to punish countries to get global manufacturing moved back to the US, then it doesn't make any sense to lift them.

If Trump is using tariffs as a stick to get countries to what we want them to do, then that is a different argument. He could simultaneously threaten an embargo, or a military invasion, or economic sanctions

I've committed to planning on getting a 6 pack daily for the last 12 months

But we ultimately prioritize trade with the countries with which we have a treaty. Remember, we do not have a trade agreement with China, and we are importing a lot of products from China.

I'll give you an example, I've said it here: The textile industry, the shoe industry. I think that part of the violence in Guanajuato has to do with the collapse of a part of the industry that brought a lot of prosperity to Guanajuato and, in general, to the whole of Bajío, but, particularly, to Guanajuato; because Querétaro, for example, generated other types of investments and did not have the textile industry like Guanajuato had, which it still has, and the shoe industry.

So, the entry of many Chinese products into Mexico caused the collapse of this industry in our country.

So, what do we want? To recover it, to strengthen our industry. Why? Because it creates jobs, because it strengthens us, because it generates well-being, because it reduces violence, everything that this means.

So, in that sense, we have to review the tariffs we have with China, but also, there is no trade agreement on certain things; other things, hardly at this time, right?, because they are no longer manufactured in Mexico.

But all within the framework of the Mexico Plan, which has to do with strengthening our economy.

Sheinbaums press conference - Surely sounds like Trump is getting them to think differently about trade with china.

Paragraph 3 of sturg’s post is defensible from Trump.

I have issues with Paragraph 2 if that is the plan.

My fear is it is neither.

Because it was a no brainer that Mexico would bend becuase of how important our market is to them. These concessions were quick and will promote a strong North Americn manufacturing engine for the world. The US will be much better off because of it.

Trump running around with a gun pointed to his head saying “you better do what I want or I’ll shoot!” - real art of the deal master class

Its not about just the US - Its about getting it away from China and making NOrth America a manufacturing force. I've told you this repeatedly.

Hysterical argument though - Trump will threaten an invasion. Dear lord the irrational hatred you have resulting in these irrational thoughts.

what outcomes should we expect to see from this major concession and by when should we see them?

Can you read? I'm not saying he will threaten an invasion. I'm saying he is using a threat to get a country to do what he wants.

That's a completely different thing than "tariffs are good, and economic boon, and other countries will pay for them."

All of these are long term plans - Never once have I said tomorrow things are going to change.

This is about making America as well as our northern/southern neighbors as strong as possible and we have been gutted by the globalists the last 40 years.

So over the next 5-10 years (why its essential to have Vance in place because can't trust 'prinicpled' conservatives to do whats right here) we will see more manufacturing shift to North America and the CCP to be weakend.

Saying you will place tariffs on a nation versus threatening an invasion are two different things. But you can continue to think they are comparable.
