Trump threatens 200% tariffs on alcohol from Europe

Megan Lebowitz
Trump took to Truth Social this morning to threaten 200% tariffs on all alcohol from countries that are in the European Union, citing the E.U.'s plan to place a new tariff on U.S. whiskey.

"If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES," Trump wrote. "This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S."

He railed against the E.U. in the post, falsely saying that the union was "formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States."

The only thing that makes sense is he wants to have something that gets close to an insurrection so he can declare martial law and then never give up the presidency.

There's no logic to these tariffs. There isn't a huge market for American wines in Europe, and they're already the cheap option here.

Nothing makes sense!

The same people will say when the economy is rocking and rolling in 2026.

'Trump is just lucky'

All Trump had to do to keep economy rocking and rolling was just keep things moving. OUr GDP was going up while inflation was going down.

America also doesn’t/can't make champagne, but why stop him when he’s on a roll

It’s really quite funny watching people fight over who was fixing the economy that’s continued to be broken.

Trump's goal is to fix it - And that upsets a lot of financially interested parties because they love the 'broken' economy.

Biden economy wasn't good because it was blown up in 2021 and we never recovered from it, but it was trending in the general right direction, we were getting back down to normal levels of inflation etc. Any reversal of that trend is a bad thing. Pretty straight forward.

https://reason.com/2025/03/14/howard-lutnick-doesnt-get-to-decide-what-you-buy/

"We don't want to buy 60 percent of our aluminum from Canada," Lutnick explained during an interview with Fox News on Thursday. "We want to bring [aluminum production] to America."

Lutnick's phrasing there is pretty telling. There is no "royal we" in the marketplace—that Canadian aluminum is not being bought by the federal government, but by private American businesses, which are making deals with private companies on the other side of the border.

There is, indeed, no reason to think about those transactions in a nationalist way at all. The economy is not a World Cup match. When Canadian companies exchange their aluminum for American companies' money, both sides win.

About 60 percent of the aluminum used by American companies to make all manner of products comes from Canada. That should be none of Lutnick's business. In fact, no one should have to give a flying **** what the commerce secretary—a position that really shouldn't even exist—thinks about where American businesses source their aluminum (or any other product). What happened to the days when Republicans believed businesses should be free from interference from Washington?

What Lutnick is talking about is central planning, plain and simple. It's also just silly. How much of America's aluminum supply should come from Canada if not 60 percent? Is 50 percent the right amount? Is it 17.54 percent? Lutnick doesn't know—because no one does—because that's a question without an answer.

What if America were to find its own products it had some sort of competitive advantage in and we focused instead on producing those items domestically. We could even export them to countries that could not make them as effectively so they could focus on things they’re comparatively better at making. Heck, we could make an entire global supply chain based on this!
